    2. INSTITUTIONAL FACILITIES Animal Vaccines are being produced in respective sections and laboratories. These are:   §    Media and sterilization Section §    Bacterial Vaccine section §    Viral Vaccine Section §    Standardization and Quality Control Section §    Vaccine Supply and Marketing Section. §   Center of Animal Biotechnology

    3. INSTITUTIONAL FACILITIES These laboratories are equipped with necessary machinery and equipments which are performing up to the level of satisfaction, despite the fact that some of them are decades old.

    4. INSTITUTIONAL FACILITIES Various processes involved in vaccine production and facilities available are as follows: §    Media preparation and sterilization §    Vaccinal seed culture preparation and inoculation §    Incubation §    In process checking and testing §    Vaccine formulation §    Quality control testing §    Vaccine dispensing §    Vaccine supply and marketing

    5. INSTITUTIONAL FACILITIES An experimental laboratory animals colony has been maintained for quality control tests of vaccines. Similarly cold storage facilities have been established for storage of vaccines at recommended temperature.

    6. VACCINE BEING PRODUCED VRI Peshawar is currently producing the following vaccines. 1.    Haemorrhagic septicemia vaccine 2.    Black quarter disease Vaccine 3.    Enterotoxemia cum lamb dysentery vaccine 4.    Anthrax Spore Vaccine 5.    Newcastle Disease Vaccine 6.    Oil adjuvant Haemorrhagic Septicemia Vaccine 7.    Bird Flu Vaccine 8.    Foot and Mouth Disease Antiserum

    7. TYPE OF PROTOCOL/METHODOLOGY Almost all of the above vaccines are being produced according to FAO /OIE protocol.

    8. Quantity Vaccines production is mostly demand oriented. During the current year the following quantity of vaccines have been prepared. HSV = 0.50 Million doses BQV = 0.38 Million doses ETV = 0.58 Million doses ASV = 0.1 Million doses NDV = 14.7 Million doses HSOAV = 12945 Doses Bird Flu Vaccine = 26500 Doses FMD Antiserum = 212 Doses

    9. QUALITY CONTROL MECHANISM Vaccines are produced in sterilized environment adopting strict hygienic and bio safety measures. Various types of tests are routinely carried out right from manufacturing till finished product according to standard protocol of FAO / OIE.

    10. TYPE OF ASSISTANCE REQUIRED Assistance is required in the following areas. Ţ    Professional Trainings in new techniques in Vaccinology. Ţ    Technical and financial assistance in construction of P-3 level Laboratories. Ţ    Machinery and Equipment assistance. Separate building for vaccine production with well-equipped labs.

    11. QUALITY CONTROL REQUIREMENTS Ţ    Specific trainings of technical staff in related techniques Ţ    Well established Animal House Well equipped laboratories

    12. DNA VACCINES Two main approaches are being used to develop vaccines using recombinant DNA technology. The first involves deleting genes that determine the virulence of the pathogen, thus producing attenuated organisms (non-pathogen) that can be used as live vaccines.

    13. DNA VACCINES The second approach is to identify protein subunits of pathogens that can stimulate immunity.

    14. DNA VACCINES Korean Scientists have developed a combined vaccines against Pleuropneumonia, Pneumonic Pasteurellosis and enzootic Pneumonia in swine. In the Philippines, a vaccine has been developed that protects cattle and water buffalo against Haemorrhagic Septicaemia, which is the leading cause of death in these animals.

    15. VACCINES AGAINST PARASITES A novel strategy for developing vaccines against blood sucking parasites involves using components of the gut wall of the parasite that are not normally exposed to the immune system of the host. When the parasite feeds, it ingests antibodies induced by the vaccines, which destroy the gut wall and, consequently, kill the parasite. This strategy has been used successfully to develop a vaccine against the one-host tick Boophilus microplus
