  2. FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS PENS Curriculum Vitae Date of birth: July, 2004Place of birth: Lisbon (FENS Forum)Participants: Aim:increase cooperation in European neuroscience education

  3. FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS THE ACTORS of PENS SCHOOLS • Graduate students (intermediate/advanced) • Post-doctoral students The selection criteria have been set to encourage the participation of young students

  5. FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS OVERALL GOALS OF PENS • Increase the quality and visibility of neuroscience education in Europe • Decrease gaps between different European neuroscience curricula • Increase the mixing and collaboration of young European neuroscientists • Create a network of alumni and teachers capable of enhancing scientific collaboration and the establishment of international research projects within Europe (e.g. The Alumni Programme) • Alert young scientists to the research possibilities offered by laboratories in Europe and outside (eg: publicizing the Network of European Neuroscience Schools (NENS) and IBRO’s International Registry of Neuroscience Programme • Assist the development of Neuroscience outside of Europe by providing opportunities in Europe for the training of promising students who intend to return to their home countries (e.g. the present IBRO-FENS Fellowships programme, as well as the travel grants offered to students accepted to the European schools)

  6. 2007 NENS GENERAL MEETING FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS PENS The PENS Committee is responsible for: selection funding running of the schools ensuring a reasonable geographic distribution of the activities providing travel funds and lodging for students from the less privileged regions in Europe and from outside the continent maximize coordination while respecting the mandate and independence of both organizations

  7. 2007 NENS GENERAL MEETING FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS TYPES OF ACTIVITY Schools with stable location • stable location • experienced local organization • supported on a prolonged basis • faculty and the curriculum of these schools are selected on the basis of proposals • should aim to fulfil the requirements for the awarding of credits by the National European Neuroscience Graduate Programs

  8. 2007 NENS GENERAL MEETING FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS TYPES OF ACTIVITY Temporary Schools with shifting locations

  9. 2007 NENS GENERAL MEETING FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS Temporary Schools with shifting locations • retain the capacity to organize new single-event • allow students and faculties in different places to tailor their school to local needs and resources • these schools are essential to build science capacity through education • these temporary schools should allow FENS and IBRO to respond better to the needs of their member organizations

  10. 2007 NENS GENERAL MEETING FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS FENS-IBRO ACTION COORDINATED BY PENS TYPES OF ACTIVITY Travelling teaching programmes • a mobile small Faculty capable of giving series of lectures or organizing • workshops • the goal is to enhance Neuroscience education by responding to local needs • the “core” schools might contribute members of their faculty and resources to • these travelling teams • these activities could be held in conjunctions with the IBRO Visiting Lecture • Programme (VLTP)
