2. People in Court • Defendant- The person accused of a crime/ being taken to court. • Judge- Government Official with authority to decided lawsuits brought into court. • Jury- A group of people selected to hear a case and declare a verdict based on the facts of the case.

3. Plaintiff- Person who files a complaint or lawsuit/ Person bringing forth the lawsuit. • Prosecutor- Lawyer for the plaintiff/ Prosecutes the defendant. • Bailiff-an officer in a court of law who helps the judge control the people in the courtroom.

4. Court Terms • Charge- Description of the law police feel the defendant has broken. • Felony- A crime carrying a penalty of more than 1 year.

5. Probation- A sentencing alternative to prison when the courts release a convicted defendant under certain conditions and supervision. • Sentence- Punishment ordered by the court for the defendant if convicted. • Trial-A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads “not guilty.”
