  1. Brief History & Explanation of the Sport Artistic Gymnastics

WHAT IS ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS • Artistic Gymnastics is a discipline of gymnastics. • Artistic Gymnastics is an individual sport like tennis and swimming. • Competitive gymnasts perform short routines (ranging from approximately 30 to 90 seconds) on different apparatus: Asymetric Bars, Balance Beam, Floor, Vault, Individual All-Around ,Trampoline. • Getting 10 points out of 10 at each one of the events in one competition is almost impossible.

HISTORY OF GYMNASTICS ARTISTIC • More than 2,000 years ago Gymnastics as a system of harmonious sports training started in Ancient Greece. • In 1881 the International Gymnastics Federation was founded • Gymnastics was included into the program of the 1896 Summer Olympics • In 1928 women were allowed to participate in the Olympics.

  4. Gymnastics Artistic & Geography • Countries that traditionally do well at G.A. are Russia, China, Romania and the U.S.A • Greece usually is among the first 12-15 countries in the world.

  5. Standing out • The most famous champion was Nadia Comaneci (photo). The Romanian gymnast was the only one to get 3 10s at 3 events out of 4. • The most famous Greek G.A.athletes are Melissanides at Floor (photo) , Tampakos at Rings, Bisbiko at Balance Beam. Melisanides is the only Greek who has got 10 at Floor.

  6. Sport and Sacrifice • G.A athletes are always on a strict diet. They shouldn’t eat crisps, chocolates or any high-fat food. Greek G.A. athletes should train 2 hours in the mornings before school and 2 hours in the evenings after homework.
