Intro • A popular denominational tract is called • the "Roman's Road to Salvation" • Salvation is an important subject. • The Scriptures warn us about the danger of being mistaken concerning our salvation (Prov. 16:25; Mt. 7:21-23; Rom. 10:1-3). Prov. 16:25 25. There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. The "Roman's Road to Salvation" contains incomplete teaching concerning what one must do to be saved Mt. 7:21-23 21. "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22. "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' 23. "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.' “Roman's Road to Salvation” seeks to explain how one is saved from sin by using verses from the book of Romans (Gives partial truth!) The “Roman’s Road to Salvation” Tract • The recognition that we, as all people, • have sinned • Rom. 3:23 • The understanding that eternal • punishment awaits the unsaved • Rom. 6:23 Rom. 10:9-10 9. that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10. for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. • Jesus died for the sins of all • Rom. 6:23; 5:8 • All one needs to do is believe in Him, and • one will be saved • Rom. 10:9-10 • The results of the salvation Jesus brings • Rom. 5:1; 8:38-39 Tract ends with “Sinner’s Prayer” Most of the journey through the “Roman’s Road to Salvation” is right, except the end result of the “Salvation” part!! Why Is the “Roman’s Road to Salvation” Incomplete? The recipients of Paul’s letter to the Romans were Christians (1:1-7: Saints) • We must all have a complete picture of • the Bible's teaching on Salvation • Mt. 4:7 (NKJ): Jesus said, “It is written again” • When considering a subject in light of the Scriptures, we need to consider all the facts of Scripture which speak to that subject! Mt. 4:7 (NKJ) 7. Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'YOU SHALL NOT TEMPT THE LORD YOUR GOD.' " Why do we view the “Roman's Road to Salvation” as being incomplete? The “Romans Road to Salvation” tract is incomplete because it teaches salvation is by faith only, leaving out the part that obedience plays in salvation in the book of Romans! Completing The "Roman's Road To Salvation"
Completing the “Roman’s Road to Salvation” Romans calls for obedient faith in both its opening and closing verses! (1:1-5; 16:26) • Rom. 2 clearly states that one will be lost • or saved based on whether or not that • person has obeyed God (Not faith only): • 2:6, 8, 13 Rom. 1:5 5. through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name's sake, • Rom. 6 clearly places salvation after • obedience, not after faith only: • 6:17-18 • Rom. 10 clearly places salvation after • obedience, not after faith only: • 10:1-3, 16, 21 • Israel was lost because they had not "submitted" to the righteousness of God (1:16-17). • Those who were lost had not “obeyed the gospel” (10:16). • They had been “disobedient” (10:21). • Had they obeyed, they would have been saved! Rom. 16:26 26. but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith; Completing The "Roman's Road To Salvation"
Completing the “Roman’s Road to Salvation” • The “Romans Road to Salvation” is • incomplete because it fails to show that • Rom. 6 teaches that baptism is also a • necessary part of the road to salvation: • 6:3-5 • Romans teaches that baptism comes before new life, not afterit! Rom. 6:3-5 3. Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4. Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, • 6:3-5 is in agreement with the N.T. teaching on the necessity of baptism for salvation from sin! (Mk. 16:15,16; Acts 2:38; 22:16; I Pet. 3:21) • One baptized into Christ (6:3) is baptized • into His body, the church (Eph. 1:22-23): • 8:1; Eph. 5:23 • Baptism frees one from sin and puts one into the church that Jesus built (Mt. 16:18; Acts 2:47). Obedience to the gospel causes “new life” in Christ, not just “faith only!” Completing The "Roman's Road To Salvation"
Conclusion Does the “Romans Road to Salvation” lead one to salvation? Acts 22:16 16. 'Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.' The denominational tract calls on the reader to read Rom. 10:10-14 and then say the “Sinner’s Prayer” to receive salvation • It is claimed by many that the “Sinner's • Prayer” is what Paul is referring to when • he writes “call upon the name of the • Lord” (Rom. 10:13-14) • Acts 22:16: The truth about what it means to “call on the name of the Lord” was revealed to Paul by Ananias (sent to Paul by God) Nowhere in Scripture has God expected people to pray for salvation! • The lost sinner calls on the name of the Lord by being baptized, not by saying the “Sinner's Prayer!” Completing The "Roman's Road To Salvation"
Conclusion • The main point in Rom. 10 is the failure of • the Jews to obey the gospel (10:3,16,21) • 10:14: Note the order Paul gives is (in reverse): hear, believe, and call (baptism – Acts 22:16). Rom. 10:14 14. How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? • The Romans had believed the gospel and been baptized to be saved! (1:5-7; 6:3) We can confidently conclude that the saints in Rome were never told to say the “Sinner's Prayer” in order to be saved! (“Roman’s Road to Salvation” tract misleads people!) Nowhere does the N.T. teach that a lost person should pray for salvation! The Book of Romans is bookended with the teaching on obedience (1:5; 16:26: “obedience of faith”), therefore it is an important step on the road to salvation! Have you heard the gospel, and having heard, have you believed, repented, and obeyed? Completing The "Roman's Road To Salvation"
