Why a .22 LR Is Actually a Viable Caliber for Home Defense

While not everyone may view a .22 LR as a great gun for self-defense, considering them more ideal for hunting varmints or plinking, there actually are some decent arguments to be made for a .22 LR firearm being a decent defense option. 1. Why a .22 LR Is Actually a Viable Caliber for Home Defense While not everyone may view a .22 LR as a great gun for self-defense, considering them more ideal for hunting varmints or plinking, there actually are some decent arguments to be made for a .22 LR firearm being a decent defense option. Whether you agree or disagree with the following conclusions, Ammunition Depot is there with all the .22 LR ammo for saleyou’ll need for defense, hunting, training, or just plinking for fun. Stopping Power and the Odds The primary, perhaps sole, argument against the .22 LR as a defense caliber is its size. It just seems like an intuitive fact that when it comes to stopping someone intent on doing you harm, a .22 LR is nothing compared to something like the .45 ACP, or an AR-15 fitted with a .300 AAC Blackoutupper. While they wouldn’t like it, a bad guy could likely shake off a .22 LR round and keep coming—but there’s no shaking off a .45. And there’s no argument that a larger caliber is going to do more damage. Though it is the hope that most civilians will not end up in a situation in which they need to draw a gun to protect their own life. The Reality of Using a Gun Defensively Additionally, should someone find themselves in that position, it turns out that a gun is pretty much a gun. Most people, criminally inclined or no, have the same response to having a gun being leveled at them—they run. Should they choose not to run, or represent the rare aggressor who notes the circumference of the bore and decides to risk taking a .22 LR round, actually being shot is almost certainly going to change their mind really quickly.

  2. One study of shooting encounters found that, for whatever reason, a .22 LR round was more likely to stop an adversary after one shot than a .40 S&W or .45 ACP. That was likely the result of the .40 and .45 shooting data representing police shootings, and they’re more likely to use deadly force, so bad guys were willing to face more than one shot to get away. But with civilians, one tag with their best .22 LR ammo was often enough to discourage an adversary altogether. Furthermore, the organizer of the study couldn’t find a single situation in which an armed civilian was killed by a criminal after that criminal had been shot with a .22 LR.
