Background • Kerala Model of Development • Several success stories • Pitfalls too • Health indicators • Life expectancy -77 years • Infant mortality -1.4% • Maternal health • Equivalent to developed west • Sustainability issues • Present status: not encouraging • Eradicated diseases coming back?

UN Millennium Development Goals By 2015 • Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger • Achieve universal primary education • Promote gender equality and empower women • Reduce child mortality • Improve maternal health • Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases • Ensure environmental sustainability • Develop a global partnership for development

  4. Kerala Performance • Likely to achieve targets by 2015 or earlier • Secondary problems persist • Communicable disease • Life style diseases • Accident deaths • Alcoholism • Cancer, Heart, Liver, Kidney aliments on the rise • Overall health deteriorating??

  5. Public Health issues • Operating costs escalating • State facilities inadequate • Private facilities –affordability • Medium sized hospitals becoming unviable • Disease prevention -desirable

  6. Health care system in India • Predominantly privatized. • Government spends only 2-3% of GDP • US-15.2%. • EU-more than 10%. • China-4.3%

  7. Vision KHM • Improve health standards of people at all levels in the community through knowledge based action plan and determined and passionate efforts for executing them through transparent team work and human touch

  8. Objectives of KHM • Promote general health and wellbeing of the people • Work for maintaining a healthy surrounding and environment   • Encourage helpfulness and sacrifice through blood and organ donation • Interact with governmental and non-governmental agencies towards eradication of diseases and health hazards • Provide the required forum for the needy to find solutions and cost effective remedies for general health issues

Objectives of KHM • Conduct Health related studies, surveys analyses and document them • Voluntary promotion of preventive actions against medical and health calamities, • Propagate ways and means of healthy living • Serve as a Platform that authorities look up to for suggestions & ideas and seek help to monitor on-going health improvement programmes • Popularize medical insurance that comes to the help in cases of major illness • Associate with efforts to bring down cost of medical attention and prices of drugs and medicines • Develop schemes for extending priority care to the elderly
