Gregor Johann Mendel was born on July 20th 1822. He is known as the father of genetics. This is because he studied the inheritance of traits in pea plants, which is also called heredity. In studying his plants heredity he used a chart called a Punnett Square. Gregor Mendel
My Punnett Squares • I will be using Mendel’s research to create my own Punnett Squares. The trait I will be using is pod color. I will tell the chances of whether the the pod color will be green or yellow.
G G g G g G g g G g G g Pod color-parents The letter G will represent green. The letter g will represent yellow
G g G G G G g g G g g g Pod color-offspring G=Green Y=yellow I took one of the offspring results to use in this square as the parents.
Applied to Humans • Now lets look at how Mendel’s research can be used for human beings to predict traits of offspring. • We are going to look at hair color only.
First Generation Cross(cross for hair color) B B b Bb Bb B = brown hair b = blonde hair b Bb Bb
Second Generation Cross(cross for hair color) B b B BB Bb B = brown hair b = blonde hair Bb bb b
