  2. What is Tone? • HOW a writer says what they are saying. • The emotional or mood of the author’s written voice • Reveals the writer’s attitude toward the topic. • Like it • Dislike it • Want to make fun of it

  3. What Adds to Tone? • Word choice – Especially this!! • Level of formality • Writing style

  4. How Do We Describe Tone? • Usually with adjectives (describing words) • Friendly • Pompous • Sarcastic • Cautious • If you are ONLY reading at the snorkeling (literal) level, you WILL miss the tone of the piece!

  5. Purpose • WHY an author writes about a topic. • BOTH tone and purpose are adjusted based upon the audience the author is trying to reach. • REMEMBER: Levels of formality ?!?
