  3. THE PARKSIDE FEDERATION • Parkside Community College • Coleridge Community College • Ridgefield Primary School

  4. What have we done so far? • • Developed our procurement strategy • Appointed consultant and project managers • Conducted desk-based research into over 40 leading schools • • Held conference to explore the core issues which will influence • the design brief.

  5. What have we done so far? • Visited five schools of particular interest. • o Hellerup skole, Gentofte, Denmark • o Orestadt Gymnasium, Copenhagen, Denmark • o The New Line Academies, Maidstone, Kent • o The Leigh Academy, Dartford, Kent • o The Pears National Centre for Autism, north London

  6. Key dates • December 2011 Appointment of Design Team finalised • April 2012 Contractor Selected • September 2012 Application for planning permission • April 2013 Completion of technical design. • Design team novated to contractor • May 2015 Construction complete • August 2015 School opens

  7. 6 principles: • Small scale learning communities enable children and young people to be known as individuals • Each learner’s particular needs are met and all aspects of development – creative, emotional, moral, spiritual as well as intellectual and physical – are encouraged • The learning process is active, participative and relates to the young person’s own experience • …..

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS – key expectations • • arrival, community presence and aesthetic value • • circulation: corridors and hearts • • community access: openness and safety • • performance, display and collaboration • • vertical integration • • flexibility and adaptability • • digital technology in learning and facilities management • • environmental sustainability • • transport

  10. We are looking for a building of high architectural quality that respects, • and is specific to, the character of the local area, the local community and • our educational vision. It will be at the heart of Trumpington for many • years to come: a school that draws people in and encourages them to • learn, a local landmark of positive change and opportunity. We are not • looking for an ‘iconic’ design in the sense of grandeur or overwhelming • physicality, or in quirky gimmicks.
