You can work your way towards upgrades once you begin racking up miles on American Airlines flights. Step 2: Learn how to earn miles toward an upgrade by reviewing the Advantage participant guide. You can also earn miles when you book a hotel room and rental cars with certain companies. Step 3: Start earning miles. If you pay the full fare, you can get a free upgrade within the United States starting at 5000 miles. If you will purchase a discount fare, you need 15,000 miles and will have to pay an additional $75.

  2. Step 4: You can request an upgrade awards program when booking a flight by providing your Advantage number. Available to all Advantage customers. In some cases, you are required to pay the fee which depends on your destination and the type of fare. Step 5: To reach executive platinum status, earn enough miles. Once you get this title, you can have eight upgrades called system wide upgrades, per year for yourself a passenger you designate. Upgrades must be requested at the time of booking.
