Aim • Discharge responsibilities under the social responsibility agenda • Identify the most appropriate route (HCA or Work Placements) for an individual to gain necessary skills or experience - ‘tailoring’ • Tailor learning/understanding to fit the needs of the individual • Provide realistic opportunities for individuals to access jobs either now or in the future
Healthcare Academy • 5 week pre employment course • Partnership with a variety of agencies including Job Centre Plus • Includes a work placement • Support from application to employment • Travel allowance
Key outcomes • Increased knowledge of Healthcare roles and clinical environments • Well prepared to apply for employment • Well prepared for interviews • All mandatory induction components completed • Skills covered – effective communication, motivation, confidence building, team building and customer care • Potential career pathway from support staff to registered practitioner

Work placement Scheme Principles • Developed from Summer 2007 • “a period of work experience, which is unpaid, and is part of a period of study or return to work initiative, which takes place for an agreed period of time between NHS Lothian and career agency/provider” • Practical Experience before entering/re-entering world of work • Demonstration of broad spectrum of career pathways available to potential recruits • Pre-screening and matching of applicants to available departments offering placements
