  3. more practical approach? use these Ethical Decision criteria: 1.     Justice 2.     Utilitarianism 3.     Spiritual values 4.     TV rule 5.     Influence 6.     Core 7. Emergency

  4. J: JUSTICE 1.     Justice: all follow same rule 2.     Utilitarianism: greatest good 3.     Spiritual values: do unto others 4.     TV rule: defend openly on TV 5.     Influence: have any 6.     Core: important to you, your values 7. Emergency: urgency of situation One can apply this model to business ethics situations, questions, or decisions

  5. Ethical Rules, J and U

  6. S: Spiritual or religious values? • Golden rule: do unto others as you would want them to do to you • This idea is found in all the great religions and/or spiritual teachings of the world

  7. (T) TV rule: Can you explain exactly what you did on TVB, knowing your family is watching TV? If so, OK! TV rule is Hulpke’s favorite (in theory)

  8. I: Influence • you see an ethical problem! Should you act? • would your action have any Influence? • If MORE influence, your responsibility is greater • if you have no influence your responsibility is less or maybe zero (this idea from Aristotle who said “incapacity” might be an excuse for inaction)

  9. C: CORE Values Leisure Status Customer satisfaction Knowledge Job security Society Honesty Friends Family human life Worker safety Human Life Health Freedom Trust Peace Property rights Stockholder values Living standards Job satisfaction Efficiency Power

  10. E: Emergency • Is the situation urgent? • Is time running out? • Is the situation a true emergency? Is life at stake here?

  11. How to USE the JUSTICE model: STEP 1 (put any 3 here. You pick YOUR three) ASK TV RULE UTILITARIAN SPIRITUAL VALUES does good outweigh bad? can I explain this on TVB? would I want others to do it? Yes No No Yes No Yes

  12. COMPARE RESULTS STEP 2 If no is the answer to all three questions, it is probably unethical If yes is the answer to all three questions, it is probably ethical If yes and no are mixed, it could be either ethical or unethical

  13. be ready to apply all 7 to: • Can you apply to cases you think of yourself? • Try it!

  14. Summary • Learned about Corporate Social Responsibility • We have explored business ethics • Learned about the JUSTICE model and how to use it • Next? Plan ahead, it is chapter 6! Decisions! The essence of a managers job!
