  2. Step 1: Topic • List the topics of the story. • Story: Lord of the Flies • War • Society • Leadership • Civilization • Innocence

  3. Step 2: Plot • Choose one of the topics and write what happens in the story in regards to that topic. • Civilization: The boys are left without supervision after the plane crash. Their island is a barbaric, uncivilized place. They at first attempt to be civilized and have rules. Jack, however, breaks off into his own group and they become savages. The civilized people are killed off and by the end of the story, all the boys are uncivilized.

Step 3: Main Message • Write your opinion of what the author is trying to share about life or human nature based on the topic and what happens in the story involving that topic. • Golding shows how different people respond and act in an uncivilized setting. The characters are used to show what happens to a society when there are no civilized rules. Based on what happens to characters, he’s showing savagery is more of a instinct than civilization. People are often made moral by society’s rules, but not by their choice.

  5. Step 4: Theme Statement • Develop a statement of theme. Include the topic and the author’s intended message. Make sure the statement is persuasive. • Throughout the novel, Golding associates the instinct of civilization with goodness and the instinct of savagery with evil.
