  3.  Impact you feel when you enter a new culture.  Anxiety.  Feeling of frustration.  Alienation and anger.

  4. Experts agree that culture shock has stages and all agree that once people get beyond the initial and most difficult stages, life in a new country becomes a lot better.

  5.  Stage 1 – Excitement: The individual experiences a holiday or 'honeymoon' period with their new surroundings. They: Feel very positive about the culture. Are overwhelmed with impressions. Find the new culture exotic and are fascinated. Are passive, meaning they have little experience of the culture.

  6.  Stage 2 – Withdrawal: The individual now has some more face to face experience of the culture and starts to find things different, strange and frustrating. They: Find the behavior of the people unusual and unpredictable. Begin to dislike the culture and react negatively to the behavior. Feel anxious. Start to withdraw. Begin to criticize, mock or show animosity to the people.

  7.  Stage 3 –Adjustment: The individual now has a routine, feels more settled and is more confident in dealing with the new culture. They: Understand and accept the behavior of the people. Feel less isolated . Regains their sense of humor.

  8.  Stage 4 – Enthusiasm: The individual now feels 'at home'. They: Enjoy being in the culture. Functions well in the culture. Prefer certain cultural traits of the new culture rather than their own. Adopt certain behaviors from the new culture.

  10. U.k culture: Diverse : wide mix of cultures in the UK Tolerant : general tolerance to foreigners and those with different opinions and beliefs

  11. Freedom : to express own opinions and wear what they want. Don't expect people to agree with you all of the time! Humour : British people have a strong sense of humour, but it can be hard to understand when someone is joking if you are unfamiliar with the British sense of humour. Modesty : Dislike of complaining directly.

  12. Many students find that the British climate affects them a lot. especially during the winter months, difficult to get used to.

  13. You may find British food strange. It may taste different, cooked differently, may seem bland heavy compared to what you are used to

  14. Constantly listening and speaking in a foreign language is tiring. You will miss your familiar language. Regional accents in the UK will make the language harder to understand.  People may also speak quickly.

  15. Social behaviors may confuse, surprise or offend you. Relationships between men and women more formal or less formal than you are used to. Differences in same sex social contact and relationships.

  16. You may find it uncomfortable to wear heavy winter clothing.  Not all students will find the British style of dress different.

  17.  The British generally have a reputation for punctuality.  In business and academic life keeping to time is important.  Social life is a little more complicated.

  18. UK academic Culture It may take some time for you to adjust to studying in the UK. Academic culture and expectations vary according to the subject: -The level of study -The type of institution.

  19. General trends that you may notice in the UK: Students often work independently. Students are expected to develop critical judgment. Learning large amounts of factual data is important in some subject areas.

  20. Class contribution can also be a traumatic experience. Tutors assuming a background knowledge of political and economic issues in the UK. As one student put it: 'even little things like how to submit your essay if you are in a different country are problematic'.

  21. Challenges for international students studying at higher education institutions in the UK. English language ability. It can prove onerous and stressful. Not speaking up in class.

  22. Differences in study methods: Less amount of time spent in class. Less emphasis on independent study Focus on developing the information provided by lecturers in their session.

  23. Understand that this is a normal experience. Keep in touch with home. Find a supplier of familiar food. Take regular exercise. Make friends with international students. Use the university’s services. Investigate the Students’ Union and its societies.

  24. Culture shock is entirely normal. It has positive aspects. Significant learning experience. Valuable skills.
