  3. Why do you need to use test taking strategies? • You want to do well on tests. • As a reader you want to understand what you are reading. • We often have to read challenging passages.

  4. Three steps to the RAP Strategy R – Read each paragraph. Think about what you read. 2. A - Ask yourself: What is this paragraph about? P - Paraphrase: Write a sentence in your own words to explain what the paragraph is about.

  5. Let’s try a paragraph…. On November 19, 1863, President Lincoln gave a speech at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The speech was given at the place where the Battle of Gettysburg took place. People had gathered at the battlefield to dedicate part of it to the men who had been killed in battle. Read, Think about it, What is this paragraph mostly about? Paraphrase: Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address to honor the men killed in the Battle of Gettysburg.

  6. When you are learning how to do this you must remember to: • Write one sentence that is a complete thought. • Your sentence must be accurate. • Each new paragraph must have new information. Don’t repeat! • Must have useful information. • Must be in your own words – that’s paraphrasing!!!!

  7. You must practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice………..
