  3. Why it Matters • Jefferson wants to reduce the size and power of the federal government. However, he increased the federal debt for security and posterity of the United States.

  4. The Nation Looks West • Mississippi River was major travel and trade route for Ohio River Valley • Spain controlled Mississippi River with the port of New Orleans • Spain allowed travel for Americans (Pinckney treaty) • In 1801 Spain gives Louisiana Purchase to France (Napoleon) • Oh No!

  5. Buying Louisiana • France was fearing a revolution in Haiti by Toussaint L’Ouverture • France needs money • Louisiana sold to USA for 15 million • This included city of New Orleans • .05 acre • Doubled the size of USA

  6. Jefferson’s Dilemma • Many people felt that Jefferson had no power under the Constitution to purchase land • Under the authority to make treaties, Jefferson felt he DID have the right. • Congress later agrees

  7. Lewis and Clark Explore the West • Goal to explore: • what this land has to offer • make trade with Native Americans • Find waterway to the Pacific • Started in St. Louis in Spring 1804 with 3 boats and 40 men

  9. Pike’s Expedition • 1806-07 • Zebulon Pike explored Southern part of Louisiana Purchase • Tried to climb Pike Peak but only got 2/3 because of snow • Captured by Spanish and accused of as spies • Released after a few months • Did Spanish have a legitimate concern?
