    3. Gis Infobase 3 Agenda Setup General Editing Procedures Metadata Request

    4. Gis Infobase 4 Overview GIS Infobase has 2 components: Metadata Work Requests Architecture

    5. Gis Infobase 5 Setup Download Application Expand the Application File Server Side Setup Client Side Setup Getting Started

    6. Gis Infobase 6 Setup – Download Self Extracting File http://www.reo.gov/reo/projects/tools/infobase/infobase.htm Place in temp directory Expand File Run Setup DO NOT PLACE IN DEFAULT PATH No spaces in path, Metadata Parser aborts Upgrade Jet Database Engine

    7. Gis Infobase 7 Setup – What’s there? Application Directory DbGen – Schema creation scripts Doc – User Guide Internet – Misc. files, need copy of all graphics Copy contents to Intranet Intranet – ASP and graphics Copy contents to Internet Library – Crucial files to fix Jet Database Engine fix_jet.bat JetSP4.exe (installed with fix_jet.bat)

    8. Gis Infobase 8 Setup – Server Side Move scripts over to directory on IBM as there are calls to other scripts. Oracle creation scripts – FSDBA must run cr_gis – master control script, run this cr_table – creates tables and constraints cr_trig – creates insert and mod triggers cr_syn – creates public synonyms cr_grant – creates role and grants to role pop_lu.sql – populates lookup tables Creates the GISINFOBASE role Grant the role to users – full access Grants select to public

    9. Gis Infobase 9 Setup – Patch Jet Engine Fixes Jet Database engine to work with Oracle insert triggers – finally! Only for Office 2000 Expand the JetSP4.exe file Located in <app path>\library Write files into <app path>\library Run batch file fix_jet.bat Located in <app path>\library Copies files to correct place and registers them

    10. Gis Infobase 10 Exercise 1 – Dowload & Install Download Expand Setup Patch Jet

    11. Gis Infobase 11 Setup – Client Side Check Sql*Net connections Run SqlNet Easy Setup (Oracle group) Idb – standard install from OSE

    12. Gis Infobase 12 Setup – Sql*Net Verify that you can connect with Sql+ Log in with / or fs_public/fs_public Quirk in Sql*Net allows you to login with / Setup your windows login to be the same as your IBM login Other unit connections can be made handout

    13. Gis Infobase 13 Setup – Client Side ODBC Setup – Oracle Connection Control Panel -> ODBC 32 Manager System Tab Should be idb DSN using Oracle’s ODBC

    14. Gis Infobase 14 Setup - Client ODBC Setup – INFO Connection – Doric Set up a DSN for each corporate work space Navigate into the info directory and select arc.dir

    15. Gis Infobase 15 Exercise 2 – Install Connections Check Sql*Net Connection Log in with SqL+ Create a Alias to your home unit Check/Setup Oracle ODBC Connection User Oracle ODBC Driver Create another connection to your home unit Install Setup Doric Driver Get off reo web site

    16. Gis Infobase 16 Setup – Getting Started Start GIS Infobase Will prompt on No Defaults Set Click on No Update Links to Tables Refresh links to the attached tables in Oracle Select Update Data Link on Main Menu Select the ODBC DSN you set up Watch the status bar for progress meter

    17. Gis Infobase 17 Setup – Set Program Defaults

    18. Gis Infobase 18 General Editing Moving around and Adding Records All data is LIVE not a copy! Finding Records Some forms have Find button Access has default Find

    19. Gis Infobase 19 General Editing Helpful Keystrokes

    20. Gis Infobase 20 Create Agencies Create Agency Lookups Used to tie people to Requests and Stewardship

    21. Gis Infobase 21 Create Personnel Create records for GIS People to start and all Data Stewards Used in Metadata and Requests

    22. Gis Infobase 22 Create Quad Lookup (opt) Was used in Cover Edit Log (broke) Managed source data for use in plotting

    23. Gis Infobase 23 Exercise 3 – Setup up defaults Add your own unit to the database Add your name to the employee list Configure program for you being user and Andy Peavy being the GIS Coordinator

    24. Gis Infobase 24 Metadata Condensed version of FGDC Not all items available from standard Consists of two parts Coverage documentation Related Table documentation Output FGDC format Easy Read format Web Pages – start page plus all related Report

    25. Gis Infobase 25 Metadata - Input Field Captions noted in bold are required for program to work Some fields can be generated Bounding Coordinates Export File Size

    26. Gis Infobase 26 Metadata - Input General Process to document a cover Document coverage in Data Dictionary Screen Document feature attribute tables and related lookup tables (oracle, info, whatever) Maintain Edit Log as you go forward

    27. Gis Infobase 27 Metadata – Coverage Input

    28. Gis Infobase 28 Metadata – Table Input

    29. Gis Infobase 29 Metadata – What is this stuff? User Guide – page 35 – 37 Source – checked means the coverage is a source coverage and not derived. Plays into what covers are presented for export. Source Date – Date the coverage was originally compiled. Edit Log shows the edit history. Keywords – a FGDC requirement, general search words for cover (road – transportation, etc)

    30. Gis Infobase 30 Metadata – Documenting Tables A lot of detail, so automation important Use Table Documenters Oracle INFO Copying data from a spreadsheet

    31. Gis Infobase 31 Metadata – Table Documenters Oracle and INFO, works the same Click Documenter button, don’t enter table header data as it will be undone Select the table to document in the list Info tables have . Replaced with – Oracle shows views and tables Sit back and will populate Table Columns Data types

    32. Gis Infobase 32 Metadata – Table Bugs Problem in Access 2000 SubForms for Columns and Codes will be blank when you add the table Close Table form, then re-open – geez ?

    33. Gis Infobase 33 Metadata – Edit Log General entry for a round of editing Reports use for last update date

    34. Gis Infobase 34 Exercise 4 – Document a Cover Document a coverage from your unit Document a coverage from the Winema Pool Have Agencies and People input first Complete Coverage Page Several Tables Edit log records

    35. Gis Infobase 35 Metadata – Loading Data Can load data from external sources Copy/paste into large text blocks For tables, Create spreadsheet with exactly the same columns in same order as Infobase Select range in Spreadsheet Switch to Infobase Click in the subform Edit, Paste Append (Not just paste)

    36. Gis Infobase 36 Metadata – Loading McGuinnes Jim created metadata for several forests with local back end Access Database Strategy Clean install of oracle schema Disable insert/modification triggers in Oracle trig_off.sql in <app_path>/dbgen Load data through back end .mdb file For tblCover, tblCoverDataType, tblCoverEdit, tblCoverKeyword, tblCoverTable, tblTable, tblItem, tblTableCode, tblCompanyAgency, tblPerson Enable insert/modification triggers in Oracle Drop and re-create sequences with max values trig_on.sql in <app_path>/dbgen

    37. Gis Infobase 37 Metadata Output - Intranet Goal is to produce web site for the dictionary

    38. Gis Infobase 38 Metadata Output - Intranet Intranet – creates a dictionary via html

    39. Gis Infobase 39 Metadata Output - Intranet Produces pages for everything in the database Writes files out to the directory set Start page is index.html Naming convention: c#.htm – coverage, # is ID number of cover t#.htm – table, # is ID number of table Move files over to your web server and you are on line…

    40. Gis Infobase 40 Exercise 5 Produce the Data Dictionary in Web ready format.

    41. Gis Infobase 41 Customizing the Web Page Add your own graphics, rest is fixed

    42. Gis Infobase 42 Metadata – Intranet ASP Files Use if you have access to a NT server on your network Default ODBC DSN used – idb Edit files, replace “No Name” with Forest Name (Winema, etc) ddmain.asp dd.asp

    43. Gis Infobase 43 Metadata/Data Prep - Internet Goal is to distribute digital data driven from metadata Ensures metadata is included with data Reduces your work load (producing exports) Produce in 2 formats FGDC – post on a NSDI Clearinghouse Server Quick reference format for Humans

    44. Gis Infobase 44 Metadata/Data Prep - Internet Steps in Procedure Run Internet Metadata and Data Export but only select check boxes for AML production and table exports from Oracle and INFO Run the aml’s Chkcname.aml – validates names/paths Covexp.aml – Exports covers and info lookups Genextent.aml – Generates bounding coordinates Move the Oracle table export files to the IBM with BINARY FTP (preserves cr/lf) and compress with compress <filename>

    45. Gis Infobase 45 Metadata/Data Prep - Internet Procedure continued…. Create a text file of the compressed object names list –al *.Z > filelist.txt Load coverage extent file back into the database Load the file list with file sizes into the database Run the Internet Metadata and Data Export routine again and produce the final metadata documents Post all files to the web server Go have many beers….

    46. Gis Infobase 46 Step 1 – AML’s/Table Exports Check boxes for aml’s and table exports only Select Covers

    47. Gis Infobase 47 Step 1 – Selecting Covers Select Covers you want or Select All Check boxes govern what you see

    48. Gis Infobase 48 Step 2 – Run AML’s Move AML’s over to the IBM and run Covexp.aml – Exports coverage and INFO lookup tables. Compresses if selected with unix compress command (.Z) Calls chkcovname.aml to verify names and paths if errors found will report them and stop Genextent.aml – Produces a file called covextent.txt that holds the id and bounding coordinates in lat/long.

    49. Gis Infobase 49 Step 3 – Move Oracle text files Text files produced from Oracle tables exports data into ascii delimited text files Column names in first row Quotes have been stripped for loading Move files over to IBM with ftp in BINARY mode (preserve cr/lf) Compress the .txt files with compress compress *.txt

    50. Gis Infobase 50 Step 4 – Create File Size List Need to get actual file sizes for covers and table exports back into the database so users can see how large they are. Create text file with list ls –al *.Z > filelist.txt FTP file to PC in Ascii mode (CR/LF)

    51. Gis Infobase 51 Step 5 – Load Extent File Need to get coverage extents in lat/long back into database (FGDC requirement) Run the Load Cover Extent routine FTP file to PC in Ascii mode (CR/LF) Load Cover Extent file Review a few covers to see if bounding coordinates and file sizes are there

    52. Gis Infobase 52 Step 6 – Produce Final Metadata Uncheck AML/Table Export & Check others

    53. Gis Infobase 53 Step 7 – FGDC Option Directory created under <application>/internet/fgdc DOS Screen flashing is the Metadata Parser (MP) running Review Error Log and Correct Files Produced text => Ascii file formated to fgdc spec html => fgdc format in html sgml => fgdc format in sgml err => error files

    54. Gis Infobase 54 Step 8 – Move Files Move all files to your web server Move all files in fgdc directory to NSDI Clearinghouse web server Congrats! You have your data on line You have complied with Executive Order 12906 You are doing the right thing! Lets go have beer ?

    55. Gis Infobase 55 Break

    56. Gis Infobase 56 Requests Track work requests and provide a structured place to document work Store procedures and amls Store related documents Manage larger projects Track hours by Job Code Provides place to Repeat Work

    57. Gis Infobase 57 Request – Basic Input Basic data then buttons for related stuff

    58. Gis Infobase 58 Request – Storing Aml’s Select the AML button Copy aml into windows clipboard Paste in with shift + insert

    59. Gis Infobase 59 Request - Reports Request Form Request Status Request by Employee Requests by Project Request Log Staff Summary

    60. Gis Infobase 60 Help REO will Support 1-800-CALL Bob 1-800-CALL John 1-800-CALL Dale User Guide

    61. Gis Infobase 61 Future Needs Write metadata out to coverage directories File dialog buttons where needed Keep on Microsoft for fixes Sub form problems

    62. Gis Infobase 62 Summary Setup the Application Produce Metadata Internet, Intranet Quick Referent & FGDC Produce Requests
