  1. Enrico Fermi

  2. His Early years • Born September 29 1901 to parents Alberto Fermi and Ida de Gattis • His father was the chief inspector of the ministry of communications and his mother an elementary school teacher • 1945- Became a U.S. citizen. • Died November 28 1954 • He loved learning physics and math. • When his brother died in 1915, Enrico immersed himself in scientific study to distract himself.

  3. Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa • He received his undergraduate and doctoral degrees years later after he enrolled in this school in 1918. • In order to go to this school, he had to take an entrance exam. • On the essay part of the exam he had to write on the characteristics of sound.

  4. Professor in Rome • Became professor at University of Rome at the age of 24. • He won a competition that was held by Professor Orso Mario Corbino( director of the institute of physics). • The director helped Fermi select his team. • The group had famous experiments…but in 1933 three group members left the group and went off to different countries.

  5. Professor in Rome • They made important contributions to many practical and theoretical aspects of physics. • Some of those contributions were; theory of beta decay and the discovery of slow neutrons. • Fermi was well-known for his simplicity in solving problems • His paper on beta decay was first published in Italian and German then in English. • He remained in Rome until 1938.

  6. The Nobel Peace Prize • Won the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 37. • This was held at Stockholm. • He demonstrated the existence of new radioactive elements produced by neutron irradiation . • He also got the award for his discovery for nuclear reactions brought on by slow neutrons. • After receiving his prize, his family and him immigrated to New York. • His wife was in danger because of anti-Semitic brought on by the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini. • Most of his assistants were out of work because of the new laws.

  7. The Manhattan Project • The unofficial designation for the U.S. War Department's secret program. • United Kingdom helped the U.S build the atomic bomb. • It was an attempt to stop World War 2. • Was organized in 1942 • And it was to explore the isolation of radioactive isotopes and the production of an atomic bomb • The initial research was conducted at Columbia University in Manhattan.

  8. People He worked with • Max Born- German Physicists. • Franco Dino Rasetti-Fellow student, Italian Scientist. • Edoardo Amaldi -Italian physicists • Bruno Pontecorvo -Italian-Born atomicphysicists. • Emilio Gino Segrè- Italian physicists. • Luigi Puccianti- Fermi’s PhD advisor. • Paul Ehrenfest-Austrian physicists andmathematician.

  9. More People • Ettore Majorana-Italian theoretical physicist. • Hans Albrecht Bethe-German/American physicist.

  10. His Legacy • Mother- built her own pressure cooker…may have inspired him to build the first nuclear reactor in 1942. • 1928- Fermi married Laura (1907–1977, early environmentalist.) • They had two children while living in Rome, Italy • A daughter -Nella Fermi Weiner, PhD (1931–1995), artist and feminist • A son Giulio ("Judd") Fermi, PhD (1936–1997).
