  4. Objectives • Students learn about social work and social problems in the context of Sub-Saharan African societies and their social development. • Students get some practical and theoretical understanding for working in the international development field.

  5. Study methods • This course will include class instruction, group work/discussion sessions for 16 hours. • There will be three articles/on-line readings assigned for the students. • Readings will amount to 20 hours of work. • Essay (besides the lectures the reading materials are also reflected in the essay) amounts up to 90 hours of work. • Assessment: Scaled 0-5 • 1. attendance in the lecture seminar • 2. essay, 7-8 pages (in English or in Finnish) based on lectures and reading material

What is an essay? • An essay is a piece of writing on a particular topic or theme. • The topic/title of an essay can be decided by the writer. • Conventionally the objective of an essay is often to survey the literature or other material in a particular field. Examining the literature may also be critical. • A well written reviewing essay consists at least • An introduction where you set up your 'research question‘. • Review of the lectures and reading material • You may use also other literature on the topic/the academic discussion of the topic • Conclusions

Whenpreparing an essayyouareexpected • to clearly define and limit the theme • an essay should be approximately 7-8 pages long • be aware that essay should have a clear and coherent structure • it should be written in proper academic language • references should be marked in the text • on the last page there should be a list of references

  8. Layout of an essay 1. On the cover page of your essay you should mark: • the title of the essay • name of the author • name and code of the course • date 2. Use font size 12 and spacing 1,53. Paragraphs are separated with one empty space 4. Essays should contain subtitles/headings, but they do not need to be numbered. Apt subtitles are an efficient way to structure the presentation. 5. On the last page there should be a List of References including all the references you have used (lectures, articles, books, statistics, on-line material etc, also unpublished material and lectures should be listed)
