  6. GENERAL SURVEY BACKGROUND List of 41 schools from MA Dept. of Education 3 schools do not have autobody program 37/38 programs returned questionnaire

  7. GENERAL • NATEF-approved 86% • Frame work 36% • Vehicles/week .4 - 10

  8. EQUIPMENT • Spray painting booth/room 100% -- Down-draft ventilation 81% -- make-up air 89% -- explosion-proof exhaust fan 97% Paint priming outside booth 16%

  9. SANDING, GRINDING, WELDING • Use sanders w/ vacuum 64% • Welding – exhaust system 43% • Sanding/grinding – tarps 39%

  10. PAINTS AND SURFACE PREPARATION • Water-borne basecoasts 8% • Chromate paints 29% • Lead paints 15% • Methylene chloride 6%

  13. RECOMMENDATIONS - EQUIPMENT • Spray painting booth/room: down-draft ventilation Mechanical supply of tempered, outside air • NFPA Class I, Division 1 location, including explosion-proof/intrinsically safe electrical equipment

  14. RECOMMENDATIONS - EQUIPMENT • Air velocity in a spray booth 100 fpm • Spray painting distance from potential ignition source 20 ft.

  15. RECOMMENDATIONS – SANDING, GRINDING, WELDING • Vacuum sanders with a HEPA attachment • Local exhaust ventilation for welding • Tarps or other kinds of enclosures

  16. RECOMMENDATIONS – PAINTING, SURFACE PREP. • Water-borne paints • Avoid lead, chromium • Avoid methylene chloride
