  2. Session • NHH Dementia Strategy • Why is Dementia NHH’s Business? • Putting it all into Action – The Dementia Champions • The Work Continues • Any Questions?

  3. NHH Dementia Strategy In April 2011 NHH Dementia Strategy and Action Plan was approved It set out how we would implement the housing related objectives of the National Dementia Strategy - Living Well with Dementia 2007 NHH is a member of the Dementia Action Alliance. We have signed up to the National Dementia Declaration and produced an action plan

  4. Why is Dementia NHH’s Business? Our Dementia Strategy recognises that: • Staff across Notting Hill Housing may come into contact with people who are living with dementia. • The Alzheimer’s Society reports that two thirds of people with dementia live in the community. Some of our customers with dementia may have a diagnosis and others may not. Those customers without a formal diagnosis do not have access to the treatment, care and support they and their families need and want.

  5. Why is Dementia NHH’s Business? Customer care Our staff may be the first professionals to become aware of a change in the health of a customer. This means it’s important for staff who have contact with customers to be aware of the symptoms of dementia so that they recognise them and are able to respond appropriately.

  6. Putting the NHH Dementia Strategy into Action - Dementia Champions The Dementia Champions role was developed as part of the NHH Dementia Strategy: • Improvements in the delivery of services by having a core group of staff who challenge colleagues and promote best practice. • Having a visible point of contact for customers, relatives and staff.

  7. Putting the NHH Dementia Strategy into Action - Dementia Champions • Development of dementia awareness training programmes that are appropriate to the job roles of staff and delivered by our in house Dementia Care trainers. • Development of our in house ‘Be Dementia Aware’ campaign to raise dementia awareness across NHH by having a section on the NHH intranet, displaying posters, and delivering Lunch and Learn sessions to staff.

  8. Putting the NHH Dementia Strategy into Action - Dementia Champions • Ensuring staff have access to information on creating dementia friendly homes. • Articles about dementia in our customer magazine. • Running Dementia Awareness Sessions for customers and relatives. • Encouraging customers to visit their GP if worried about their memory. • Offering reassurance to customers and relatives.

  9. Putting the NHH Dementia Strategy into Action - Dementia Champions • Providing information on dementia and signposting to other organisations such as the Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia UK. • Improvement in the quality of life for our customers through working with other organisations involving music, theatre and Dementia Care Mapping. • Raising dementia awareness among customers by involving them in the design of the Dementia Champions logo.

  10. Dementia Champions Logo The Dementia Champions logo is a ‘folded’ version of the Notting Hill Housing logo, with our corporate orange and blue which is commonly used to represent dementia care. The logo design was chosen by customers and staff A customer said that she found the logo “very comforting and warm”.

  11. The Work Continues • Ensuring we keep up to date with best practice in dementia care • Developing more staff to become Dementia Champions across NHH • Working with communities to promote dementia awareness • Creating dementia friendly communities
