Amazing mathematicians • We encourage the children to talk about numbers and think of their own problems that they would like to solve. • Maths is integrated throughout the day. • It is VITAL that your children have the opportunities to represent maths in a way that makes sense to them. This may not make sense to you but it is your child's way of making sense of maths. • Children can learn mathematical tricks which does not necessarily mean that they understand the concept. • Discussion and mathematical language is key to their development. • The process is just as valuable as the outcome.

Developing skills • It is vital that children develop a secure foundation of maths in order to have a good understanding of mathematical problems and how to solve them. • Careful counting- All children must be taught to count accurately and to understand what numbers really mean. • Number order and the value of each number. • Seeing numbers in everyday life and understanding their worth. • Using numbers in everyday situations. (shopping) • Developing different problem solving strategies. (understanding that there is more than one way to find an answer) • Allow lots of time to explore, it is fundamental to their future understanding.
