Introduction to Internet Marketing • To “Market” means “to offer for sale” • "Marketing", for our purpose here, means to offer one's product (or service) for sale in the particular marketplace called the World Wide Web. Marketing on the web has its own rules, procedures and methods. • Make the distinction that you aren't actually marketing your WEBSITE, you are marketing your PRODUCTS or SERVICES through your website and other online avenues.

Introduction to Internet Marketing • Most website designers know very little about how to market the products and services offered by a website once they've done their job and gotten the website up on the web. • Most new website owners know even less about "marketing a website" and have no interest in the subject until they realize that there is little traffic coming to their website, and no sales are being made. Then it becomes a very important subject indeed, worth studying and doing in the real world to sell their products or services.

  4. Introduction to Internet Marketing • "Website marketers" are specialists who know the ins and outs of how to get people to visit your website AND buy your product or service when they get there. Really good website marketing companies do this so well you can actually make a profit selling your products or services online! • There is no way to FORCE people to come to your website, or to force them to buy once they are there. You have to convince them to come to your website, of their own free will. You have to tempt them to click on the link to your site. That's the only way they will show up as worthwhile traffic to your site. • You also have to tempt the visitors to your website TO BUY. It's not much different than trying to sell something in the real world. It requires some "salesmanship".

Internet Marketing – What “Works” • Search Engine Optimization • Treat your website as an advertisement • Register your website in directories • Get lots of links to your site from other sites • Advertise in Pay-Per-Clickthrough (PPC) Search Engines • Email Advertising • Blogs • Affiliate programs

  7. Internet Marketing – What “Doesn’t Work” • Doing nothing - this never works. • Throwing up a cheap website. • Frames-based websites. Search engines can't read them  • Cheap or free hosting. You get what you pay for.  • Websites built with Flash. Search engines can't read Flash.  • Too many images in a website, not enough text. Search engines can't read images.  • Spam. If you send out spam, you can go to jail for it.

  8. How to Design a Commercial Website • Look at your website a continual advertisement • Your website should be enjoyable • A website should make you money • Your site should build up an email list • Design your website with search engines in mind
