  2. When and Where he was Born • July 1808 he was a free born African American. • In Saratoga Springs,New York. • Died in 1857. • Everyone was shocked about that tragic news.

  3. What he was known for? • He’s noted for having been kidnapped in 1841 when enticed with a job offer. • When he accompanied his supposed employers to Washington, DC, they drugged him and sold him to slavery. • He was transported to New Orleans. • He was sold to a plantation owner from Rapides Parish, Louisiana.

  4. What happened after 12 years? • He regained his freedom in January 1853. • Very few to do so in the cases of such kidnapping. • Held in the Red River region of Louisiana by several different owners. • He got news from his family, who contacted friends and enlisted governor of New York.

  5. People were not fair at all • Solomon Northup sued the slave traders but lost in the local court. • A black man should not go into the law for suing white man. • The two white man was charged with a $5,000 bail. • Without Northup’s testimony a conviction could not be secured and the men were released.

  6. Solomon Northup made a book • He published an account of experiences. • His book is called Twelve Years a Slave • Northup also gave dozens of lecture throughout the Northeast about his experiences as a slave. • In order to support the abolitionist cause.

  7. Solomon Northup’s Marriage and kids • On Christmas day of 1829, he married Anne Hampton. • She was a mixed race, African, European, and Native American. • His children are Elizabeth, Margaret, and Alonzo. • They owned a farm in Hebron in Washington County, and worked at various jobs.

  8. His family and education • Solomon’s father Mintus was a freedman who had a slave life. • His master Capt. Henry Northup manumitted Mintus will. • Free color woman lived in Minerva, Essex county. • His dad him and his brother at a level considered high for free blacks

  9. Here was his long line that was remembered in the book • “This is no fiction, no exaggeration. • If I had failed anything, it has been presenting to the reader too prominently the bright side of the picture • I doubt not hundreds, have been as unfortunate as myself; that hundreds of free citizens have been kidnapped and sold into slavery. • And are at this moment wearing out their lives on plantations.”

  10. The death of Solomon Northup • He died in 1857. • Solomon Northup’s memoir was reprinted several times later in the 19 century. • Another annotated version was published in 1968. • Then they made a movie about him from his book.
