  1. After years of teaching experience, I have devised a list of Dos and Don'tsof polite behavior in the classroom. . .CLASSROOM ETIQUETTEIllustrated Edition • BEFORE YOU EVEN COME TO CLASS. . .

RELIEVE YOURSELF • Barring real emergencies, you should not be getting upin the middle of class for a potty break. • Should you insist, remember you will use a pass from your agenda. • Should you not have an agenda or should you be out of passes, you will be required to attend After School Detention. REMINDER: Use the restroom on the way to class or after leaving class.

  3. TAKE CARE OF NON-CLASS BUSINESS OUTSIDE OF CLASS TIME Between classes go see the nurse, run errands, visit locker, get something from a friend, get a pencil from the office. Should you insist, you will use your agenda pass. Should you not have an agenda or agenda pass, you will be required to attend After School Detention.

  4. TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE (I sincerely doubt you're so important that missing a call or a text message will adversely affect the fate of the universe. Besides, you and the cell phone could end up in the front office . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . parted!)

  5. NO NOs. . . • ASSUMING THAT PERFUME/COLOGNE ISA SUBSTITUTE FOR BATHINGIf I can smell you, you've got WAY too much on! Besides, I’ll know that you haven’t bathed recently! Don’t put any cologne or scented lotions on in class either. You may cause others to start sneezing!

  6. NO NOs. . . • DOING HOMEWORK FOR ANOTHER CLASSDURING MY CLASS TIME. Unless I’ve given you permission to do so in some off time.

  7. NO NOs. . . • WORKING ON YOUR SOCIAL CALENDARDURING CLASS

  8. NO NOs. . . • PICKING NOSES, SCABS OR ACNE,AND CHEWING FINGERS(Aside from being socially unacceptable, they’re usually done with the writing hand)

  9. NO NOs. . . • ASKING, "DO WE NEED TO KNOW THIS FOR THE EXAM?" • (Sorry, you have to know everything!)

  10. NO NOs. . . ACTING LIKE YOU HAVE SOMEWHERE BETTER TO BE (Simply put . . . this is the best place to be) Don't make me waitHave you no mercy?You are eating into my lifeHave you no consideration?Who gives you rights?Don't make me count the minutesI will surely miss a beatDon't make me seeth in angerDon't make me grind my teethI hate sitting on the edge of my seatWaiting for my name to be calledI hate biting my lips in anticipationI hate to be in this state of appallI'm my time's masterAnd I will spare none for youWhy make me waitWhen you have nothing to do?So I'm leaving nowI'll never come back againYou can sit and wait for me foreverThen you will understand my pain....hmmph!So saying, off she went!! impatient and yet still unemployed!!2008 Jyothi Samarthi

  13. TALKING TO/PLAYING WITH OTHERS DURING THE LECTURES NO NOs. . . • TALKING TO/PLAYING WITH OTHERS DURING THE CLASS • Don’t speak when the teacher is talking. It’s rude and disrespectful. • Don’t speak when a teacher has given permission for a student to speak. It’s also rude and disrespectful. • Don’t speak to be off topic. • Don’t play around and distract others. • SHOW SOME RESPECT, PLEASE!

  14. NO NOs. . . • BLOWING BUBBLES, SNAPPING, MESSING WITH OROTHERWISE PLAYING WITH GUM

  15. NO NOs. . . I don’t grade like this and you shouldn’t work like this! Ask to go to the computer and look up your grades. You know how you’re applying yourself already! If you haven’t been applying yourself, get busy!

  16. NO NOs. . . • YAWNING WITH AN OPEN MOUTH. Try covering it!

  17. NO NOs. . . WATCHING THE CLOCK Try watching your teacher, the information on the white board or the bulletin board instead!

  18. NO NOs. . . • SLEEPING IN CLASS

  19. ALL OF THE ABOVE ARE DISTRACTING TO ME AND OTHERS,AND SHOULDN'T BE DONE IN POLITE SOCIETY ANYWAY. • DEPENDING ON MY MOOD, DOING ANY OF THE ABOVEMAY DRAW MY WRATH, RANCOR, IRE, RAPIER WIT, ETC.

  20. IT IS O.K. TO. . . • USE YOUR INTELLECT • TAPE RECORD LECTURES • QUESTION WHAT YOU ARE BEING TOLD • INTERRUPT TO ASK A PERTINENT QUESTION • INTERRUPT TO MAKE AN INTERESTING COMMENT • TAKE NOTES • USE GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS • FOLLOW DIRECTIONS • QUIETLY DRINK WATER IN CLASS • (as long as you remove your trash). • (Water only please!)

  21. REMEMBER: • THIS CLASS IS NOT SO LARGE THAT YOU CAN BECOME INVISIBLE,SO • WATCH YOUR BODY LANGUAGE • SCOWLING • SLOUCHING • SLEEPING • YAWNING • OTHER OVERT EXPRESSIONS OFBOREDOM • THEY WILL DRAW MY ATTENTION. • DON'T BE SURPRISEDIF I STOP AND ASK WHAT THE PROBLEM IS!
