  17. What can the School do to help your child? Fostering a Reading Culture “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you’ll learn, the more places you’ll go.” ~ Dr. Suess ~

  18. What can the School do to help your child? Malay Language Reading Programmes: BacalahSayang: Aims to help pupils who do not have the basic reading skills. Pupils will be guided to read using the phonics system. E.R.P. (Extensive Reading Programme): Aims to instil the love for reading among students. It is hope that the programme would be an impetus for students to develop a habit for lifelong reading. N.I.L.A.M. (NilaiIlmumeLaluiAmalanMembaca): Aims to develop the pupils reading habit. Pupils are required to give simple synopsis of the books they read which will be monitored by parents and teachers.

  19. What your child needs to know? Basic reading pronunciation ~ vocals and consonants. For e.g. a, é, e, u, i, o (Vowels) and b, c, m, t (consonants). The differentiation of pronunciation between words with é and e. For e.g. sémak (e taling) bermaksudmemeriksakembali. semak(e pepet) bermaksudpokok-pokokkecil.

  20. How parents can help? Cultivategood reading habit to acquire more vocabulary. Expose your child to different types of reading materials and provide opportunities for him/her to read on a daily basis (reading time as a family). Expose your child to proverbs, phrasal verbs, common phrases to enrich their vocabulary.

  21. How parents can help? Read more e.g. story books, newspapers, magazines. Speak Standard Malay during daily interactions in school and at home. Watch the newson the Suria Channel. Watch educational programmes. Monitor your child’s school work. Bring them to the library for reading activities.

Writing Skills: - To write the correct format of each alphabet / word. Reading Skill - To read an alphabet/word with correct pronunciations

To enable pupils to use spoken Tamil Language confidently:* Expose the child to Tamil Language by reading, Tamil story books to them.* Speak to them in Tamil Language at home.*Allow them to watch children’s programme in Tamil on TV. * Parents must also speak in Tamil to their children
