Tribal College Fast Facts • There are more than 30 tribal colleges that serve more than 30,000 students who represent more than 250 tribes from across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. • Most tribal colleges operate on Indian reservations. • Native culture is infused throughout the curriculum. • Tribal colleges promote students' self-esteem and cultural identity. • Most tribal colleges receive no Indian casino revenue.

American Indian Statistics • More than 560 federally recognized tribes • High School Diploma’s obtained • American Indian- 75% General Population- 91% • Bachelor Degrees obtained • 9% • Poverty • American Indian- 27% General Population- 13% • Life Span • Average 10 years shorter than the general population • Suicide Rate • 28 per 100,000

  4. Why I Am Here • Money- a tribal college is much cheaper (Haskell = $215 per semester) • Culture- native culture is taught throughout the curriculum • More accommodating to personal needs • Smaller class size • Interaction with other tribes • Networking

Family • My grandfather attended a day school on the reservation • My uncle attended Haskell when it was a Junior College • Highest degrees • Mom- Master’s degree in Special Education • Dad- Bachelor’s degree in Education, minor in Psychology • Two older sisters • Radiology Technician • Pharmacy Technician • Me- Natural Science, AS and Bachelor degree in progress

  6. Personal Statement • “Having not grown up on the reservation, when I came to Haskell, I felt like I finally got to learn about my culture. It has been an experience I will never forget. After I graduate, I plan to attend law school. By being here, I think Haskell will give me the tools to accomplish that. The teachers made it very enjoyable and I would recommend every Native kid to attend Haskell, it was by far the best decision I have ever made”.
