  3. FTF RULES • You always have to TRY but it’s okay if you don’t get it right. • Write the DATE. • Write a brief description of what the activity is. (you do not need to copy the directions word for word – these are quick activities). • Always number or letter the answers (if more than one!) • You can have more than one FTF per page. Just be sure to date them! • I sometimes collect them to count as a homework or class work grade.

  5. Classroom Procedure In addition to what’s written in the welcome letter: • Raise your hand if you wish to speak. • Raise your hand if you wish to leave your seat. (1 finger means bathroom, 2 fingers means pencil sharpen/other, full hand means question or answer). • Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. • Keep on task! • Push in your chair when you leave! • My job is to teach you. Not pick up your trash. So throw things away! • This is a working classroom. I always do my best to teach you, and you should always do your best to learn. BACK

METRIC SYSTEM(HINT: USUALLY THE HEADING UP HERE MAKES A GOOD “MAIN IDEA” FOR YOUR NOTES • The metric system is a system of measurement that is used by scientists all over the world. • In the science world it is also called it “System International” or SI. Can you think of the metric units used to measure • Liquid • Mass • Length • Temperature • Time • Write them on the white board!

  14. METRIC BASE UNITS • Liquid = Liters • Mass = Gram • Length = Meters • Temperature = Celsius • Time = Seconds

  15. LENGTH • The distance between two points. • Base unit is the meter (abbreviated with a lowercase m)

  16. MASS • The measure of the amount of matter an object contains • Matter: The material that all objects and substances are made up of • Anything that has mass and takes up space is matter • Base unit of mass is the gram (abbreviate with a lowercase g)

  17. VOLUME • The amount of space an object takes up. • Measure in L (liters) for liquid. • Measured in cm3 for solids

  21. METRIC PREFIXES • Prefixes are added to metric units to indicate smaller or larger units of measurement. • Units larger than the base unit are kilo, deca and hecto • Units smaller than the base unit are deci, centi and milli. • Prefixes also have abbreviations.

CONVERTING USING MULTIPLICATION OR DIVISION • Metric prefixes are based on 10. • Each prefix is 10 times greater or 10 times less than the prefix on either side. • To convert using multiplication or division: • Determine starting prefix. • Figure out how many times greater or smaller the prefix is that you are converting to. • Multiple or divide depending on if you are converting to a larger prefix or smaller prefix.

REMEMBER!DO A REALITY CHECK AFTER A CONVERSION • If you are converting from a large unit to a smaller unit your answer should be a larger number than the original measurement. • Example: kilometer to meter • .05 km = 50m • 10 km = 10 000m • If you are converting from a small unit to a large unit, your answer should be a smaller number than the original measurement. • Example: mL to L • 5 000mL = 5 L • .15 L = 150 kL

Problem: 300g + 3kg = ____ g Rules for Solving • Convert all numbers to the unit of the answer. • Rewrite the problem with converted values. • Add or subtract the converted numbers to solve problem. Example: • Answer should be in grams • Convert 3 kg to 3 000 g • 300 g + 3 000 g = 3 300g
