  2. Location • The Khmer Rouge took place in Cambodia in 1975 and lasted until 1979

  3. History • The Khmer Rouge was the name given to the Cambodian Communists • The leader of this genocide was Pol Pot • The motive for the genocide was to knock out an entire social order in the Country • The Khmer Rouge aimed to establish a classless communist state • During the Vietnam war, Vietnamese communists and the Khmer Rouge formed an alliance to take over Cambodia

Things Erupted • On New Year’s Day of January 1975, The Khmer Rouge launched what they hoped was the last attack on Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. • The capital had over two million refugees at this time, and access to food supplies was now cut off • Phnom Penh slowly starved as the US unsuccessfully tried the feed the whole city • There was no stopping the Khmer Rouge • On April 17th, 1975, The Khmer Rouge marched into Phnom Penh, they started to implement their plans for a new community, as agriculture as the base • April 17th, 1975, was day zero of the new cambodia

  5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKy9Ab7twUA • The s-21, was a high school that became a secret prison in the city, those who were thought to be traitors were brought here with their families • The prisoner were tortured until confessing to whatever crime they were accused of, and we later executed. • Between 1975-1978 there were estimated to be 2 million deaths due to executions, forced labour and famine • In 1978, Vietnamese troops invaded Cambodia, capturing Phnom Penh • A moderate communist government was established, and Pol pot and the khmer rouge retreated

War Crimes Tribunal • The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, is a court established to try the most responsible members of the khmer rouge • The leaders were found guilty of crimes against humanity • They were given life sentences • Pol Pot died in 1998, other leaders have died as well since the trial began ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Government • Cambodia is currently a constitutional monarchy
