  3. Verbs • Before you think of anything else, think… • Can I do this as an action? • If the answer is YES, it is an action verb!

  4. Action Verb Examples Can I strong? Can I the? Can I walk? Can I sift? Can I girl?

  5. OK, Ms. Burlamachi, but there is no action in this sentence! • Michael is a boy. • I can’t is. • Jake was strong. • I can’t was. • Julia is sweet. • I can’t is. • The students are smart. • We can’t are. • They seem happy. • Seem is not something you do.

  6. These are LINKING VERBS, plus many others! • Are • Seems • Was • Were • Became Is Appears Smells Sounds Am

  7. The trick to Linking Verbs is… They link the subject of the sentence to something that describes it.

  8. Examples of Linking Verbs • Michael is a boy. • Jake was strong. • Julia is sweet. The students are smart. They seem happy.

  9. BUT, if you see a sentence with both a LINKING VERB and ACTION VERB… The linking verb transforms into a HELPING VERB.

  10. HELPING VERBS Linking verb Action verb Josh and Michael are going to the skatepark.

  11. HELPING VERBS EXAMPLES Nikole was writing down her homework. Camron is jumping on the box. Esha and Maria are becoming friends.

  12. ADJECTIVES • Word that describes a noun or pronoun • Examples: yellow pants, warm blanket, blue coat, nice dog

  13. ADVERB • Word that describes a verb, adverb, or adjective • Examples: happily walk, carefully study, strongly lift • Before doing anything else, look for the word that ends with –LY!!!
