  2. Hi ! My name is Chubbie, the sea otter. I would like to tell a bit more about how a Sea Otter lives and how you can help us.

  3. Sea otter is one of the largest otter species, 55-130cm with a tail 13-33cm long and weighing up to 100 pounds, and rarely comes ashore, living its life in the kelp forests off the west coast of America, Alaska and Russia.

  4. Male sea otters live an average of ten to 15 years, while female sea otters live an average of 15 to 20 years. Male and female usually live in separate groups, except during breeding. Click to hear the sound of mother calling for pup!

  5. Sea otters live in relatively cold waters of 30-50F. So they have the densest fur to cut the ocean’s chill. That’s the world’s warmest fur!! THEIR FUR! YOUR HAIR! They have the densest fur of any mammal.

  6. Sea otters’ streamlined bodies, webbed feet, and long, powerful tails enable them to swim about seven miles (11 kilometers) an hour, faster than many fish. tails Features eyes ears hind flippers whisker furs jawbone Food pouch paws

  7. Sea otters close their ears and nostrils tightly when they dive as long as four minutes. Usually, though, they poke their heads out of the water every couple of minutes to get air.

  8. Sea otters have unusual eyes, therefore they can see well both above the water and when under water. Sea otters use their sensitive forepaws to probe the rocky seafloor for hidden prey. Pup is whining.

  9. What’s on the menu? Sea otters are very smart; they are one of only a handful of tool using mammals. When getting food and reaching the surface, they lie of their backs using their tummy as a table and a tool such as a stone to help open their prey, sea urchins, abalone, mussels, clams, crabs, snails and about 40 other marine species. http://www.kidsplanet.org/espanol/espint.html

  10. Worldwide, sea otters were hunted to near extinction in the mid 1700’s for their furs. Their populations are still reduced due to environmental contaminations such as oil spills and chemical products. http://www.kidsplanet.org/espanol/espint.html

  11. Even a small amount of oil is very dangerous to sea otters; the oil opens up the hairs, which releases their heat. Sea otters will then freeze and drown. http://www.kidsplanet.org/espanol/espint.html

  12. Most importantly life will all benefit from a cleaner environment - especially the otters!
