Communication • Must complete registration card in office (to Karen Forrest) • By Friday 15th of October • Check your email and F1 frequently • School website • Information on ethics, ‘psychology research participation scheme’, lectures, essays, plagiarism detection information. • Lecture materials via WebCT or lecturer’s homepage

Level 4 Critical Review Tutorial Course • Tutorial system is separate from options • covers current and general issues • Tutorials in 4 week blocks (3 per half session) • over course of year will cover all 6 topics. • 1st tutorial - Thursday 30th September at 2.00pm • go to tutor’s room. • Different for those registered for PS4029 degree • You will be assigned a published paper to critically evaluate.

Level 4 Critical Review Tutorial Course • Hand in two copies of your critical review to the Psychology Office by deadline. • Use JISC (plagiarism) website www.submit.ac.uk to submit electronic copy of essay via website. • Karen Forrest will email Class ID during first tutorial block • Late essays/missing tutorials • 1 CAS mark deducted from mark per day late • Failure to attend tutorials may lead to “deemed withdrawn”. • Extensions only in very exceptional circumstances (contact Judith Hosie) • provide medical information to Office.

  9. Level 4 Critical Review Tutorial Course ‘One-Off’ talk on how to go about writing a critical review. For All Level 4 Students Thursday 29th of September 11 – Fraser Noble 3 .

Thesis (Read Appropriate Handbook) • Read thesis handbook • General questions or problems – contact Kathryn Mearns or Judith Hosie. • Contact your supervisor as soon as possible • Remember to complete an ethics form prior to data collection. • Check suggested thesis timetable in the thesis handbook. • Assessment: thesis marked by two members of staff (supervisor and independent marker)

Thesis • Discuss the recruitment of participants with your supervisor • ‘Psychology research participation scheme’ registration • Web-based system for participant recruitment • Necessary if collecting data from individual 1st year participants - Need to register with scheme and then set up your experiment • Guidelines on School website • Contact Pete Bates if any problems.

  13. Assessment of the Thesis • Single Honours: Poster presentation (5%). February 2009 (time and date to be confirmed) Behavioural Studies: Annotated Bibliography (5%) (Friday 10th December 2010) • Thesis (95%). • Deadline: Friday 29th April 2011 for Single HonoursPsychol and Behavioural Studies students; Friday 13th May 2011 for Joint Honours Students • no extensions • Penalty of 3 CAS marks for late submission and 1 CAS for each additional day.

  14. Disclosure Scotland • You cannot undertake testing of participants unless you have received disclosure. Most of you will have received disclosure at level 3 in which case you are covered to undertake testing again this year. If you did not apply for disclosure last year please see Sandra Duffield or Helen Alexander (in the School office) for the documentation as soon as possible.

  16. Degree Classification • Degree class calculated on the basis of 18 units of assessment . • 8 units from L3 • 10 units from L4 - 6 units from options. Each option will be examined by means of one ninety-minute examination and will contribute 1 unit. Each exam will consist of six questions randomly allocated into two sections. Students answer two questions, one question from each section. Students will be examined on the three first half-session options in January and the three second half-session options in May/June.

  17. Degree Classification Continued • 2 units from thesis The marks for the poster/bibliography and the thesis will be combined (poster 5%, thesis 95%) and the overall mark will count as two units. • 2 units from the critical review tutorial courses (1 unit – the average of the 3 marks obtained in the first half session; 1 unit – the average of the 3 marks obtained in the second-half session). Look at Handbook for how to obtain a first, upper second, etc.
