Presentation Outline • Paul Miller • Introductions • CFD in the design arena • Paul Bogataj • CFD Theory • 2-D and 3-D inviscid applications • Joe Laiosa • Viscous 2-D and 3-D • Free-surface applications CFD @ IBEX 2003
CFD as a Design Tool • Structural analysis, finding pressures and surface elevations • Performance analysis, more accurate than generic VPP’s, faster and less expensive than tank or wind tunnel testing, but not as accurate in some situations CFD @ IBEX 2003
Fluid/Structure Interaction • A combination of fluid dynamics for the loads and finite element analysis for the structural response CFD @ IBEX 2003
A Simple Example • Resistance of a sailboat hull, upright with no yaw. • The solid line represents the CFD prediction. • The “square” data points represent corresponding tank tests. CFD @ IBEX 2003
Where to Get More Training • Undergraduate and graduate courses • University extension short courses • Short courses by software vendors • Independent designers/consultants CFD @ IBEX 2003
Paul Bogataj • BS in Aerospace Engineering, Univ. of Washington • Boeing designer for 11 years • North American Champion, El Toro Class (foils and rig design) • Appendage and rig designer for every America’s Cup since 1992 • Currently working on appendage designs for four clients CFD @ IBEX 2003
Fluid Dynamic Theory • Mathematical model of flow • Basic aerodynamic concepts CFD @ IBEX 2003
3-D Geometry CFD @ IBEX 2003
Panel networks for PANAIR analysis CFD @ IBEX 2003
Keel to bulb intersection paneling CFD @ IBEX 2003
Winglet to bulb intersection paneling CFD @ IBEX 2003
Winglet tip paneling CFD @ IBEX 2003
PANAIR results, alpha = 0 degrees CFD @ IBEX 2003
PANAIR results, alpha = 4 degrees CFD @ IBEX 2003
Validation • Compare to experimental data to verify computational results • Determine how to apply methods • Panel density • Wakes • Boundary conditions • Assess limitations CFD @ IBEX 2003
