  2. Insects are small animals with sixlegs. Insects use their legs to run, walk, jump, dig, and even sing! Katydid Roach

  3. There are approximately five million different kinds of insects in the world. Assassain Bug Housefly

  4. All insects have 3 main bodyparts: a head, a thorax, and an abdomen. Ant

  5. The Insect’s Head • The head bears the antennae, eyes, and mouthparts. Honeybee

  6. The Insect’s Thorax • The thorax bears the legs and wings. Damselfly

  7. The Insect’s Abdomen • The abdomen, the last division, contains the digestive and reproductive systems. Praying Mantis

  8. Insects have a hard covering because they wear their skeletons on the outside of their bodies. Tiger Beetle

  9. All insects begin their lives as eggs. Eggs of the Harlequin Bug

  10. The Life Cycle of Insects • Some insects grow by simplegrowth. The insect only gets bigger. Silverfish

  11. Some insects grow by incompletechange. The insect gets bigger and grows wings. Grasshopper

  12. Some insects grow by completechange. The insect looks a lot different from when it was born. Viceroy Butterfly

  13. Both butterflies and moths grow in this way. • They have 4 stages of growth. • The stages are egg, larvae, pupa, and adult.

  18. Butterflies and moths look very similar, but there are ways to tell them apart.

  19. Antennas • Butterfly – The antennas are straight with knobs on the end. • Moth – The antennas look like small feathers.

  20. Activity • Butterfly – It is usually active during the day. • Moth – It usually rests during the day and is active at night.

  21. Wings • Butterfly – It rests with its wings standing up. • Moth – It rests with its wings laying flat.

  22. Most insects live short lives. Some adults insects only live a few hours. Mosquito Firefly

  23. Some insects may be pests. • Insects can damage valuable crops and trees. Cockroaches Aphids

  24. Many insects help humans be eating other insects that destroy crops. Ladybug

  25. Insects are a crucial food source for many animals that are valuable to us. Rainbow Trout

  26. Insects pollinate many of the plants that provide food for us. Bee

  27. Useful products such as honey, beeswax, and silk are produced by insects. Honey Silk

  28. Insects are an important part of our world.
