  2. Depression Having a loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities,sadness, feeling down - these symptoms are familiar to all of us. If they persist and affect our life substantially it may be depression.

Fast facts on depression • Depression seems to be more common among women than men. • Symptoms include lack of joy and reduced interest in things that used to bring a person happiness. • Life events, such as bereavement, produce mood changes that can usually be distinguished from the features of depression. • The causes of depression are not fully understood but are likely to be a complex combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychosocial factors.

  9. Psychotherapy Talking therapies for depression include • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) • Interpersonal psychotherapy • Problem-solving treatment

  10. CBT and interpersonal therapy are the two main types of psychotherapy used in depression. • Interpersonal therapy helps patients to identify emotional problems that affect relationships and communication, and how these, in turn, affect mood and can be changed.

  11. Antidepressant medications Antidepressants are drugs available on prescription from a doctor. A number of classes of medication are available in the treatment of depression: • selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) • monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) • tricyclic antidepressants

  12. Exercise Aerobic exercise may help against mild depression since it raises endorphin levels and stimulates theneurotransmitternorepinephrine, which is related to mood.

Types of depression • Persistent depressive disorder is often called mild depression or dysthymia. • Seasonal affective disorder is often triggered during the shorter days of fall and winter. • Postpartum depression can affect people during and after pregnancy. This depression can be mild or major.

  14. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome, which is commonly known as PMS. • Bipolar disorder can involve symptoms of minor or major depression.

  15. Outlook • Identifying depression at an early stage may be helpful. If a person is unsure whether they have depression, it may be a good idea to consult a doctor. • When depression is mild, simple lifestyle changes may have significant, lasting benefits. These benefits may become apparent more quickly to some people than others.
