  2. WHAT IS 8 BIT? What is 8 Bit? - Binary Logic • Bit is short for “BInary digiT” • A bit is the smallest piece of information that a digital computer can address. • A bit is a switch that is recognized simply as being on or off, and is recognized by the numbers 1 and 0. • Colors on a B&W digital copier must be encoded using bits, with one bit representing two colors, usually black and white. • An eight bit depth designation on a B&W digital scanner indicates that each scanner dot is represented by 8 switches that simply turn on or off. Because of the possible combinations of eight switches, each dot can be any one of 256 shades of gray. Therefore, 8 Bit is 2 to the 8th power. The equation is simple and is calculated as follows: 8 Bit = 2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2=256 4 Bit = 2x2x2x2 = 16 2 Bit = 2x2 = 4

  3. WHAT IS 8 BIT? Digital Concepts - Binary Logic • Now consider that each dot is being evaluated for color. At 8 bits of possible value per color for each of the Red, Green, Blue scans, the total number of possibilities jumps to: 256 X 256 X 256 = 16.8 Million possible combinations of colors. That’s a big box of crayons!

  6. WHAT IS 8 BIT? “What Is More Important? The Size of the Dot…. Or What Goes In It?”

  7. WHAT ABOUT COMPETITORS? In contrast, here is a sample list of competitive vendors, and their video interface specifications: • Xerox = Advertises 2400dpi, but is a 600dpi pixel, divided into 4 quadrants, to simulate 8 bits per pixel • Canon = 4 bits per pixel • Sharp = 4 bits per pixel • Ricoh = 2 or 4 bits per pixel selectable. When selecting the High Quality (4 bit) mode, causes laser engine to draw image twice, causing slow print speed

  8. WHAT ABOUT COMPETITORS? Since the Computer Sends 8 Bit… Shouldn’t Your MFP Be Able To Print It?

  9. 8 Bits Per Pixel Sample “Tie Downs” • “Since the bizhub provides you with 16.8 million colors to choose from, won’t your staff benefit from this state-of-the-art color output?” • “Can you see how your company’s marketing will improve its ROI?” • “Wouldn’t you agree that the size of the dot, is not as important as what goes in it?” • “Can your staff wait to put Konica Minolta’s innovation to work in your office?”
