shakespeare changes the meaning of words

Because of European influence increasing in English society, European vocabulary integrated into English writing.

  • Shakespeare loved to exploit this in his writing to create many different meanings of the same word.
    • Ex. In the sentence “Light, seeking light, doth light of light beguile.” the word “Light” has multiple meanings of wisdom, eyesight, and actual daylight.
