  2. What does that mean?

  3. Everything that happens in a story is the plot.

  4. As you read a story, you should be thinking about what is happening.

  5. That means you should be thinking about the events that happen in the beginning of the story, the middle of the story, and the end of the story.

  6. In the beginning of the story, the setting and characters are given. The beginning also tells the story’s problem.

  7. The middle of the story tells how the characters try to solve the problem.

  8. The end of the story tells how they solved the problem. Problem Solved! Yahoooo!

  9. Remember, most stories have a problem that needs to be solved. That problem and the solution are part of the story’s plot.

  10. Let’s be a detective. We’ll read some stories and decide what the plot is.

  11. Lauren’s New FriendsLauren’s best friend, Shaly, movedaway. Now she has nobody to playwith. Her baby brother is too small and not much fun. Lauren is moping about when she hears shouts and cheers from outside. She looks out the window. The new neighbor kids are playing baseball- her favorite game! They are happy to let her play. Best of all, she now has new friends!

  12. The answer is “A.” What is Lauren’s problem?A. Lauren’s best friend moves away and she doesn’t have any friends to play with.B. Lauren’s brother wont’ stop crying.C. Lauren doesn’t know how to play baseball.

  13. The answer is “C.” At the end of the story, how does Lauren solve her problem?A. She joins a baseball team at school.B. She plays basketball with her neighbors.C. She joins the new neighbors playing baseball.

  14. Best CostumeMr. Hinson announced there would be a costume contest. He said, “The child with the best costume will win a prize.” Anthony wanted to dress up as his favorite animal, a horse. He told his best friend, Julian. Julian told him that he wanted to be a horse, too! They couldn’t have the same costume! Anthony thought of a plan. They both walked into school wearing their costume. “A horse has four legs, just like Julian and me,”Anthony told Mr. Hinson. Both boys were inthe same horse costume! They won and sharedthe prize.
