  1. Tuesday, October 22nd • One Minute Mystery • Evaluation Essay Prep Sheet • This Friday, your Evaluation Essay is due. OEC students, see me during work time today!!

  2. The Case of the Fatal Slip Dr. Haledjian parked his car and offered his services to the state trooper. The policeman was about to question one of the drivers involved in a tragic accident on the winding mountain road. The driver was young, broad-shouldered, and dressed in evening attire that was spotless, except at the cuffs and shoes. These were splattered with mud. Dazedly he told his story. “I was taking Joan to the dance. That other car crossed the centerline, forcing me wide. The road is slippery from the rain this morning, and I skidded off the embankment.” “Luckily,” he continued, “I escaped injury when my car hit that tree. But Joan was knocked unconscious. I carried her back toward the road. As I passed the side of the ravine, I slipped and she tumbled from my arms. It—it was horrible!” “I didn’t cross the line,” insisted the other driver. When I heard his car crash through the rail, I braked and hurried back to help.” “What did you see?” asked Haledjian. “He was carrying the young lady,” admitted the second driver. “As he got near the embankment, he slipped to his knees and the girl fell without a sound.” Haledjian descended the treacherously wet embankment. The intermingling of grass, rocks, and mud made a search for footprints useless. At the spot where the first driver said he lost his hold, Haledjian could see the broken figure of the girl a hundred feet below. Back on the road he said, “You should hold both these men on suspicion of murder, officer. What did Haledjian suspect about the two men and why did he suspect them?

  3. The Case of the Fatal Slip What did Haledjian suspect about the two men? He suspected that the two men had staged the accident, crashing the driverless car into the tree (not the ravine) and threw the girl to her death. Why did he suspect the two men? Neither man was hurt and had the young man “slipped to his knees” in the mud, as his accomplice claimed, his clothes in that area would not have been “spotless.”

  4. On your article, you should have the following: a star * and SUB next to at least 3phrases that support your answer. What information in this article supports your score? Underline the most interesting details about the author AND publication. Underline at least 3 for EACH. an exclamation ! and REL next to at least 3 ideas that relate to your subtopics. a # hash tag and BIAS next to at least 3 places where the article uses biased language, OR if it is a mostly fact-based article, where the article presents these facts. Do a good job on this and it will pay off. Don’t fall off the ship!

  5. Evaluation Essay Prep Sheet Before we start work on the Evaluation Essay, you will organize your notes for this essay. Get out your SCARAB rubric and your annotated article. If you did the work the first time, this prep sheet will be quick and easy to fill out. If you did not do the work the first time, you now have to do it. For each letter on the prep sheet, fill in the pieces of evidence you might use in your essay. I have done this on the back as an example. I will teach you how to put these into CEW (claim, evidence, warrant) format tomorrow. Do a good job on this and it will pay off. Don’t and you might fall off the ship! If this handout isn’t done by tomorrow, you will not get on a computer. You will be behind, and if you haven’t already fallen off the boat, you will definitely be swimming with some dangerous looking sharks.
