Antelope Valley College in a snapshot … • Single college district 70 miles NE of Los Angeles, High Desert • Covers 40% of the landmass of L.A County and part of Kern County; an area of 2000 sq. miles. • Service area includes 15 communities with population of over half a million persons. • Approx. 11,000 FTES, 25,000 students unduplicated headcount with more than 50% younger than 24 years old.

Antelope Valley in general… Home of the: Edwards Air Force Base: Air Force Flight Test Center, Air Force Research Laboratory, Propulsion Directorate Air Force Plant 42: Northrop Grumman, Boeing, Lockheed-Martin “Skunk Works” Space Shuttle Space Ship One B-1, B-2, F-117, and SR-71 China Lake Naval Air WarfareWeapons Division NASA Dryden Flight Research Center Mojave Air and Space Port 1% of population Engineers and Scientists compared to 0.4% nationally

The Challenges… For industry: Recruitment and Retention of scientists, engineers, and technology specialists to satisfy local federal and private employers For the community: Students with skills and interests in majoring in STEM disciplines and professions Ability to complete STEM programs in the Antelope Valley yielding “home grown” STEM professional Prepared K-12 teachers with STEM skills and knowledge

  6. What did we do? In 2000, the Antelope Valley Math-Science Engineering-Technology Consortium MSET was formed and has since morphed into RAVE: Revolutionizing Antelope Valley Education CSU Fresno, CSU Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona establish local undergraduate and graduate engineering programs while CSU Bakersfield provides programs in Teacher Preparation and Business

  7. How did we achieve our goals? Collaborations: AVC, CSU Bakersfield, CSU Fresno, CSU Long Beach, Cerro Coso CC, AVHSUD, Career Prep Council, all K-8 districts, Antelope Valley Board of Trade, Edwards Community Alliance Lancaster University Center, City of Lancaster Edwards Air Force Base, California Air Force Research Lab: Educational Partnership Agreement (EPA) Air Force Flight Test Center: EPA NASA Dryden Flight Research Center: Teacher Preparation ,Bohn-Meyer Math & Science Odyssey Boeing Lockheed-Martin Aeronautics Northrop-Grumman Jacobs Engineering, TYBRIN China Lake Naval Weapons Center California Space Authority-DOL: WIRED Hewlett Packard

Specific Efforts: NSF-ATE Pathways grant: STEM Teacher Preparation US Dept of Education Title V – HSI grant: A comprehensive program for the increase of STEM majors US Dept of Education MSEIP grant: An innovative approach for mathematics remediation in college and high school US Dept of Education Title V – HSI grant: Opening pathways to College degrees for Hispanic Students: A Comprehensive and Collaborative Approach: Engineering and other STEM disciplines Project Lead the Way established in 5 local high schools STEM Academies with Gateway to Technology established in 2 middle schools Creation of AVC-SOAR High School-ECHS with a STEM emphasis - Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation AFRL National Defense Educational Program NDEP: K-12 school teacher STEM preparation and support
