  1. October 5 SCIENCE STARTER Warm Up: Wednesday GET OUT BASKETS / BADGES ISN / Green Folder BLUE SHEET and Group Folder IF SOMEONE IS ABSENT Turn your SMILE button ON! +-++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

  2. Week 5: Warm Up Tuesday 4. If 20g of salt are added to 40 g of water, what will be the mass of the solution? _______________________ http://www.123rf.com/photo_5777331_hand-adding-salt-using-a-salt-shaker.html

  3. Week 5: Warm Up Tuesday 5. What are three physical properties of iron? • _________________________ • _________________________ • _________________________

  4. Week 5: Warm Up Tuesday 6. Which property of a rock will change if part of the rock is broken off? A. Color B. Attraction to a magnet C. Mass D. Luster http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/8_9/circuits_conductors_fs.shtml

  5. Week 5: Warm Up Wednesday 6. Which of the following objects is most likely to float in water? A. a ball of clay B. a block of wood C. a nickel D. a nail

  6. Week 5: Warm Up Wednesday 8. Which of the following mixtures could be separated using a filter? A. Sugar and water B. Sugar and salt C. Sand and water D. Salt and water

  7. Week 5: Warm Up Wednesday 9. Allison has two balls. Both of the balls have a mass of 20g. One ball floats, the other ball sinks. Explain how this could happen.

  8. CONDUCTORS What DO THEY DO? • Stop the flow of electrical energy. • Stop of the flow of electrical and heat energy • Allow the flow of electrical energy • Allow the flow of electrical and heat energy

  9. INSULATORS What DO THEY DO? • Stop the flow of electrical energy. • Stop of the flow of electrical and heat energy • Allow the flow of electrical energy • Allow the flow of electrical and heat energy http://www.andythelwell.com/blobz/

  10. What Uses of Electrical Energy Did We See on our Energy Walk Yesterday?

  11. Testing for Conductors and Insulators Using Electric Circuits By Georgeann Wright

  12. Energy Spheres

  13. A conductor is something that let’s heat and electricity go through it. Example: Think of a hot summer day. You set on a shiny metal slide. OUCH! It’s incredibly hot and burns the back of your legs.

  14. Would you want to touch the sides of a boiling pot of water? Why or why not?

  15. When we boiled water in a beaker, what did Mrs. Wright use to touch the beaker?

  16. Hot pads, or pot holders are insulators. They insulate your hands from heat.

  17. An insulator is something that DOES NOT let heat and electricity go through it easily. Example: If you slide down a plastic slide like on some playgrounds, it will feel warm but not burn you. Plastic is an insulator.

  18. CONDUCTOR iNSULATOR

  19. Electric Energy is energy made up of moving electrons.

  20. Electrons are negative charges that circle the nucleus of an atom. They can flow in a current through conductors and produce electricity.

  21. An electric current is a constant flow of electrons through a circuit. Remember us, the ELECTRONS?

  22. An electric circuit is a complete pathway of conductors that electrons, or a current flows through.

  23. An switch is a device that turns on or turns off the current flow.

  24. If the switch is closed, then the light bulb lights up. This is called a closed circuit.

  25. If the switch is open, then the light bulb DOES NOT light up. This is called an open circuit.

  26. Today we are going to use an electric circuit to see what materials are insulators and conductors.

  27. Today we won’t be using switches. Instead, we will use the following:1) a battery holder2) 3 wires with alligator clips on the ends3) 1 bulb and bulb holder

  28. Conductor and Insulator Lab • 1. Material Managers come and get your baskets. Do not touch the items until told to do so. • 3. Put your name on your lab sheet.

  29. Conductor and Insulator Lab • 1. Glue your Electrical Energy Notes on page 11 of your ISN. • 2. Material Managers come and get your baskets. Do not touch the items until told to do so. • 3. Put your name on your lab sheet. Let’s read over it.

  30. 4. Arrange your conductor / insulator tester as show below.

  31. 5. On your lab sheet, DRAW TWO DIAGRAMS , showing the circuit when you are testing a CONDUCTOR and a circuit when you are testing and INSULATOR.On page 10, write a paragraph explaining what you learned about conductors and insulators today. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/8_9/circuits_conductors_fs.shtml http://www.andythelwell.com/blobz/

  32. Reflection On page 10, write a paragraph explaining what you learned about conductors and insulators today.
