  2. Who am I? • He rushed down the courthouse stairs, glancing anxiously at his watch and worrying about his missed appointment with the new client. • After the first day in in the strange building with bells, benches and tables, Lisa clinged unto her mother for comfort. • The excruciating pains in my body left me feeling listless. I was uncertain if another tedious day was possible. • His legs felt lethargic as he strolled out of room, his voice was hoarse after speaking multiple times in a falsetto to the rowdy children.

  3. Definition Indirect characterization is when the author SHOWS things that reveal the personality of the character.

  4. FIVE different methods of Indirect Characterization Speech, Thoughts, Effect on other characters, Actions Looks

  5. Speech What does the character say? How does the character speak? It gives insight to the character’s personality. 1. “My player did not step over the line!” shouted the coach. “I demand you review the tapes!” Secretly, though, he was sure the official had made the right call.

  6. Thoughts What is revealed through the character’s thoughts and feelings? 1. I wish it would stop raining. I am tired of sitting inside! 2.Frank insisted that he wasn’t tired or hungry, but really he was both. The long plane trip, with two delays, had left his patience in shreds. However, he didn’t want Aunt Judy to go to any trouble.

  7. Effect on Others What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character? 1.The boy glared at his sister as she ate his dessert.

  8. Actions What does the character do? How does the character behave? The boy bounced off the walls when he saw his father scurrying through the front door. It was a cold October day when Karisti’s alarm buzzed at 6:00 a.m. She hurridly pulled on her clothes and headed for the door. She carefully adjusted her headphones; then she adjusted the sleeves of her turtleneck over her hands to keep out the cold. Here goes 10 miles, she thought as she began her run. I have to be ready for the spring marathon.

  9. Looks What does the character look like? How does the character dress? The little girl crawled off the football field with slumped shoulders and a frown on her face. The man seated in the parked limousine had short hair, piercing eyes, and a serious gaze. He was dressed neatly in a starched white shirt and striped tie.
