  3. Telemedicine Lead Programme • Established in September 1999 Joint Project – Nat’l Dept. Health & MRC

  4. Our Business • Evaluate existing telemedicine technologies for improved service delivery • Setup pilot projects to test and develop new telemedicine ideas • Coordinate public telemedicine activities • Advise the National Department of Health on best practice telemedicine

  6. Usage of a Health Channel to fight HIV/AIDS in South Africa • Partnership between: • National Department of Health • Mindset Health Channel • Sentech

BACKGROUND OF THE CHANNEL • It is run by Mindset • A non-profit organization • Patients and Health Professionals can access HIV/AIDS related Information • They have installed television sets in about 105 public hospitals and clinics • It is broadcasted through satellite • Has a fixed schedule of programs on a daily basis

  8. Role of MRC’s Telemedicine Lead Program on the channel • Evaluation of the health channel content and acceptability (patients and healthcare professionals) • Assess the degree of accessibility of the channel • The degree to which learning takes place

Methodology: Rapid Assessment Response (RAR) • RAR is a method that is used to generate information to assist with the planning and development of health policies and programs, including specific health interventions and services within the shortest period of time • Participants are divided into control and experimental group • Control exposed to dramas depicting daily life • Experimental exposed to specific HIV/AIDS content

Methodology Continued • All patient interviewers underwent training • All research material were translated and made available in all local languages • Approval was obtained from DOH • Frequencies, cross tabulation and some measures of association were analyzed • Thematic analysis (qualitative data)

  11. Findings • 77.2% of the control group found the channel encouraging v/s 89.7 of the experimental group • 13.9 % of control group felt it was not encouraging v/s 4.55% experimental group • 8.86 % of the control group were not sure v/s 5.6% of the experimental group

  12. See Poster Presentation • The findings are based on 4 public health sites in 3 provinces • Mindset has not yet seen it and therefore, not ready for public discussion • Used for for illustration
