  1. Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) SUSI ANDRIANI andriani@fh-brandenburg.de TIM-99 [Introducing Asia Celluler Satellite (ACeS)]

  2. OVERVIEW • Satellite Technology • GMPCS Definition • Why GMPCS? • GMPCS Operator • Introducing ACeS

  3. sun earth moon What is a satellite ? Satellite is any object that orbits or revolves around another object (For example : the moon is a satellite of earth, and earth is a satellite of a sun)

  4. Satellite Technology What is communications satellites? • satellite as relay station in space • send and receive messages from anywhere on earth • messages can be telephone calls, TV pictures, fax, Internet connections • have a wide coverage

  5. Satellite Communication System Space segment Fixed Network TT & C Station Satellite Operation Center Mobile Network Gateway Ground segment

  6. Space Station UPLINK DOWN-LINK Transmitting Earth Station Receiving Earth Station Ground Station Satellite Technology

  7. non-GSO (LEO, MEO) 500 - 12000 km GSO 36000 km Satellite Orbits • Geostationary Orbit (GEO) 36000 km • Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) 5000 - 12.000 km • Low Earth Orbit (LEO) 500 - 1500 km

  8. What is GMPCS ? • Defined by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as, 'any satellite system (i.e., fixed (FSS) or mobile (MSS), global or regional, geo-stationary or non-geo-stationary, existing or planned) providing telecommunications services directly to the end-users from a constellation of satellites

  9. WHY GMPCS ? • GMPCS networks will provide a unique technical solution to the limitations associated with terrestrial networks, offering messaging, voice, and data communications accessibility to anyone, anywhere, at anytime.

  10. World Telecommunication Policy Forum (WTPF) (Geneva, 21 - 23 October 1996) 5 Opinions • 1 The role of GMPCS • 2 The shared vision and principles for GMPCS • 3 Essential Studies by ITU • 4 GMPCS MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) • 5 Implementation of GMPCS in Developing Countries

  11. Coverage : Global, 66 satellites, orbit : LEO (780km) operational : since 1998 --> GMPCS Pioneer • Coverage : global, 48 satellites, orbit : LEO (14000 km), operational since 1999, US company • Coverage : global, 10 satellites, MEO (103555 km), operational : 2000, Inmarsat (UK company) • Coverage : global, 288 satellites, Internet in the Sky, LEO (700 km), operational : 2004, Bill Gates & Craig Mc Graw (US) • Coverage : regional (Asia Pacific), GEO (35800 km), operational : August 2000 (launched : 12 February 2000), Indonesia MEET THE PLAYERS ....

  12. ASIA CELLULAR SATELLITE (ACeS) http://www.aces.co.id INTRODUCING....

  13. Asia Cellular Satellite • .... Asia’s first Regional Mobile Satellite Telephony System • .... allowing users to & from anywhere in ACeS Asian footprint and around the world • ACeS shareholders are : • PT. Pasifik Satelit Nusantara (Indonesia) • The Philippines Long Distance Telephone Company (Philippine) • Jasmine International of Thailand (Thailand) • Lockheed-Martin Global Telecommunications (USA)

  14. ACeS launched ... • ACeS “Garuda 1” successfully launched on 12 February 2000 by International Launch Service (ILS) • Using “Proton” rocket from Baikonur, Kazahkstan

  15. ACeS Network

  16. ACeS Network

  17. ACeS Satellite • GARUDA 1 located at 123 degree East (GEO satellite) • 11,000 simultaneous telephone channels & supporting to 2 million subscribers • Frequency : • service Link : L-Band (1525 - 1559 MHz Uplink & - 1626.5 - 1660.5 MHz) • Feeder Link : Ext C-Band (6425-6725 MHz up-link & 3700 - 4200 MHz down-link) • Service life : 12 years • Communications payload feature two 12-meter antennas • 140 satellite spot beams

  18. Coverage • Asia Pacific (China, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, Bangladesh, .... ) • ACeS subscribers travelling outside the satellite coverage area can roam on GSM worldwide networks

  19. Gateways • ..provide interface between ACeS and other telecommunication networks (e.g PSTN and PLMN) • ... Located at Jakarta, Taiwan, Thailand & Philippine • 12-meter antenna

  20. Satellite Control Facility • ...monitor the Garuda satellite • ...located at Batam Island, Indonesia • 15.5 meter tracking antenna for links with the satellite

  21. Handset • Dual Mode (satellite - GSM 900) • frequency : • Satellite 1500 - 1600 MHz L-Band • GSM : 900 MHz • ...made by Ericsson
