  2. INTASC Standard • Standard #5: Application of Content • The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues. • Name of Artifact: Contemporary Issues PowerPoint • Date: April 10th 2014 • Course: Educ 101 • Brief Description: For this assignment, we had to find an issue concerning children and schools, and inform the class about it. We created a PowerPoint over School Evacuation Plans, within the PowerPoint we explored the different things schools can use to prepare for disasters of any kind. We provided the state standards we used for this assignment and made sure to clearly explain what we were trying to get across. • Rationale: To document my understanding of Standard #5, Application of Content, I selected to include our contemporary issues PowerPoint, because this assignment demonstrates our abilities to tell the rest of the class about a global issue. This PowerPoint also requires us to share new information with our peers. Our knowledge of the curriculum and content areas are demonstrated in PowerPoint very clearly

  3. Background information on school emergency evacuations • Currently there are standards that every school and state has to go by. Recently there has been talk of improving these standards. The emergency evacuations in schools are sometimes not taken as important as other aspects of schools. Emergency evacuations are important for the kids and staff of schools. The emergency evacuations are being controlled and there are new standards being talked about and in the near future will hopefully be enforced.

  4. 7 Keys pieces of general information on Emergency evacuation • Schools should have updated evacuation plans. • Schools need to inform staff and students of exists. • Teachers need to make sure they head count before leaving the building and before entering again. • Schools should inform parents of the safety concerning evacuation plans for their child's schools. • Students should be aware of the tasks they need to complete when there is an emergency or drill happening . • Teachers should have walky talkies to be able to contact other staff when doing drills or actual plans. • All staff and students should be unaware of the drills, so they don't know if it's real or not.

  5. discussion questions 1. What do you think needs to be done in school evacuation drills? 2. What do you think schools need to improve on to have better results from the evacuations?
