  1. Fruits of The Spirit

  2. Outline • What is the Spirit? • What is fruit? • What are the fruits of the Spirit? • Why should we care about the fruits of the spirit? • How do we get the fruits of the spirit? • How do we abide in Christ?

  3. What is the Spirit? • Jesus said in John chapter 14, verse 26 "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."  • He is sent by the Father • He teaches us all things • He reminds us of God’s word

  4. What is fruit? • The end product • The harvest • Gifts from God • Fruits are what we expect to observe when the Holy Spirit is working in someone

  5. What are the Fruits of the Spirit?Galatians 5:19-23 • Love • Joy • Peace • Patience • Kindness • Goodness • Faithfulness • Gentleness • Self-control

  6. Love • Paul describes the attributes of this love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8: • Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. • "We love because he first loved us."  (I John 4:19)

  7. Joy • 1 Thessalonians 1:6, • ‘You became imitators of us and of the Lord; in spite of severe suffering, you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.’ • The Thessalonians were under great stress due to persecution; yet in the midst of it all, they continued to experience great joy. • Joy is like long-term happiness and means more than simply being gratified

  8. Peace • Jesus is described as the Prince of Peace, who brings peace to the hearts of those who desire it. • He says in John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

  9. Why Should We Care about Fruits of The Spirit? • The Fruits of the Spirit are gifts from God • They make us the people that we want to become • ‘By their Fruits you will know them’ – Matthew 7:16-20 (Sermon on the Mount)

  10. How to get the Fruits of the Spirit? • Abide in Christ • ‘As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing’ John 15:4

  11. How do we abide in Christ? • ‘To be alive and fruitful a tree should be planted by the rivers of water in order to bring forth its fruit in its season’ (Ps 1:3) • If you plant yourself away from the river you give yourself no chance of bearing fruit

  12. Abiding in Christ 2 • Plant yourself by Christ • Practically • Speak to Christ • Read God’s word daily • Stay close to the Church • Surround yourself by good people • Listen to God’s tunes

  13. Abiding in Christ 3 • ‘If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you’ John 15:7

  14. Example: Patience • How do I become a patient person? • Ask God • Please God – hurry up and make me patient • Listen to the Holy Spirit • Abide in Christ and plant yourself near the river

  15. Conclusion • We want the fruits of the Spirit because they make us who we want to be and are a gift from God. • We get the fruits of the Spirit by abiding in the Lord • We abide in the Lord by planting ourselves near to the river
