  1. Body Area Networks MIE 452F Information Systems Infrastructure Focus Topic Presentation By: Danny Leung

  2. Presentation Overview • What are Body Area Networks (BANs)? • Personal Area Networks (PANs) • Definition & Domain • BAN Applications • MobiHealth Studies/Implementation • BAN & JINI • Conclusion • Further Studies

  3. Personal Area Networks • PANs • interconnection of information technology devices within the range of an individual person, typically within a range of 10 meters • WPAN – wireless • Current Developments • Innovative data delivery involving capacitively coupling picoamp currents!

  4. PANs & BANs • Body Area Networks • Subgroup of PANs • Domain: HealthCare • Compact & Mobile • Enable transfer of vital parameters • Medical Communication

  5. BAN Structure Adapted from • MobiHealth

  6. BAN Components • MBU (Mobile Base Unit) • Known as the processing centre/hub • Sensors & Actuators • Internal ( intra-BAN) Communication • External (Extra-BAN) Communication

  7. Extra-BAN Communication • Based on GPRS and UMTS technologies for wireless broadband data transfer • GPRS (2.5G) • UMTS (3G)

  8. GPRS • General Packet Radio Services • Standard for wireless communications • packet-based • runs at speeds up to 115 kilobits per second, compared with current GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) systems' 9.6 kilobits. • supports a wide range of bandwidths

  9. UMTS • Universal Mobile Telecommunications System • deliver information at speeds up to 2Mbits/sec. • analog cellular was the first generation, digital PCS (personal communications service) the second • 3G

  10. BAN Issues • Security for BAN transmission protocol • Protection of information and control systems from unauthorized access • Fast, reliable identification and authentication • Availability & Reliability of communication resources • QoS guarantees for bandwidth, delay, and bit error rate

  11. BAN Applications • Remote Health Monitoring • MobiHealth, project at the Technical University Twente, The Netherlands • Commissioned by the European Commission (2000) • 1st live demo of BAN at the Medica International and Medical Conference and Exhibition (2002)

  12. MobiHealth • Focus on scenarios such as: • Trauma Care • Continual health monitoring • Mobile service platform

  13. Service Platform Architecture Adapted from • [Nikolay Dokovsky, Aart van Halteren, Ing Widya, ] BANip: enabling remote healthcare monitoring with Body Area NetworksInternational Workshop on scientiFic engIneering of Distributed Java applIcations 27-28 November, 2003; Luxemburg , Luxemburg

  14. MobilHealth & JINI • Dynamic discovery of services offered by a BAN • Requires RMI, so implemented according to Surrogate Architecture • BANip – an interconnect protocol • Hide complexities • Extendible to webserver technology

  15. Adapted from • [Nikolay Dokovsky, Aart van Halteren, Ing Widya, ] BANip: enabling remote healthcare monitoring with Body Area NetworksInternational Workshop on scientiFic engIneering of Distributed Java applIcations 27-28 November, 2003; Luxemburg , Luxemburg

  16. Further Study • Currently MobiHealth deployed in 9 healthcare field trials in four European countries • Evaluate 2.5/3G wireless technologies • BANs & the development of in-body communication systems (Zarlink)
