  1. Energy storage for the integration of renewable energy and THE balance of the power system The case of Martinique IRENA, MARTINIQUE JUNE 23, 2015

  2. Intermittent Renewable energies • Several constraints exist with intemittent renewable energies: • Difficulty to predict long term production opportunities • Inequal daily production • Lack of control over production and legal obligation to purchase • Impact on the power system: • Fragile supply and demand balance • Risks due to high dependency on climate conditions • High potential impact on the network’s electricity frequency EFFECTS ARE INCREASED ON ISOLATED NON INTERCONNECTED POWER SYSTEMS

  3. THE central battery system Type : Lithium-Ion Battery Power : 5 MW Maximum autonomy: 30 minutes Reaction time : 500 millisecond

  4. 5MW central Battery INNOVATION • 1st central battery system in Martinique • Self-operated and stationary storage system INCREASED NETWORK STABILITY • Power is available on the network anytime • Allows an increase in the potential of intermittent energy installed on the network. • Facilitator of energy transition BENEFITS • Profitable technology • High savings in production costs • Decreasing battery prices • Reduced CO2 emissions

  5. Preparing the Energy transition EDF is committed, with major organizations of the territory, to reduce the energy consumption by 10% by 2020. The innovative projects implemented will reduce the carbon footprint by avoiding the emission of 20,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Some of the projects: • Energy efficiency • Incubator for the energy transition in Bellefontaine
