  2. Overview on Cryptozoology Cryptozoology is the study of Cryptids, or animals whose existence has not been proven yet.

  3. History One of the earliest recorded examples of Cryptozoology is Anthonie Cornelius Oudemans’ 1892 study entitled The Great Sea Serpent. The term “cryptozoology” was coined by Scottish explorer Ivan T. Sanderson.

  4. Discoveries Following this slide are some well-known discoveries made by the cryptozoology community.

  5. Okapi • The Okapi, or Okapia johnstoni, is a giraffe-like creature found in Central Africa. • It had been told of in African folklore, but no proof could be provided. This earned it the nickname “African Unicorn” among British explorers.

  6. Coelacanth • The Coelacanth, or Latimeria chalumnae, was believed to have been extinct for over 65 million years until a museum curator discovered a strange fish for sale at a fish market in 1938. The specimen was identified as a Coelacanth, which is now known to be easily found in the waters along the coast of South Africa.

  7. Famous Examples Up next are some very well-known examples of Cryptids studied by Cryptozoologists.

  8. Sasquatch • The Sasquatch (Bigfoot, Yeti, Skunk Ape, etc.) is a large, hairy creature which has been commonly sighted throughout the world. • It is the most famous Cryptid.
